Sophie Kosow was born August 8, 1910 to Jewish immigrants living in New York City. She was adopted by her mother's second husband, Dr. Sigmund Sidney, & became known as Sylvia Sidney when she became an actress. She left Washington Irving High School to attend the Theatre Guild school in 1925 & made her Broadway debut in the play Crime come February 1927. She acted in New York & on tour before making her film debut in Fox Film's Thru Different Eyes (1929). Unimpressed with films, she returned to Broadway for the play Bad Girl (later made into a film at Fox) & was signed by Paramount soon after. She was the protégée of Paramount producer Bud Schulberg & became his mistress. Her 1st major role in City Streets (1931) was originally assigned to Clara Bow (Schulberg's previous prized star) whose career was on the wane. Paramount usually cast her as noble working-class women or gangster's girlfriends with occasional high society roles in romantic comedies through 1937. She returned to Broadway that year & made fewer films through the late 1930s & 1940s. By the 1950s, she was appearing mostly on television & sometimes on Broadway. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Summer Wishes, Winter Dream (1973) & had a career revival in several Tim Burton films & an update of the TV show Fantasy Island. She had great skill in needlepoint & was a longtime Republican. She married thrice: publisher Bennett Cerf; actor Luther Adler; & publicity agent Carlton Alsop. Her only child predeceased her. She died July 1, 1999 in New York City. The blurb on this 1934 portrait read: "READY FOR A HEAT WAVE -- Sylvia Sidney, Paramount player, moves her household to the edge of the Pacific Ocean with the first sign of spring. She stays by the sea four months of each year." #sylviasidney #paramountpictures #precode #beachside #classichollywood #republican #jewish #chaiselounge #bythesea #pacificocean #academyawardnominee #latergram

"The Thrilling Comic Book Art of Alex Schomburg," an out-of-print hardcover published in 2005. Picked up this first edition on eBay. It has a brief overview of his art career, then the rest of the book is filled with hi-res scans of some of his best cover art. He produced over 500 covers during the Golden Age, so I'm sure it was tough to choose which ones made it into the book! Here are some of my favorites for #schomburgsaturday . #alexschomburg #goldenagecomics #goldenage #precode #vintagecomics #comics #comicbooks #igcomicfamily #igcomiccommunity #igcomics #comiccollection #comiccollector #comiclife #igcomiclords #timelycomics #nedorcomics

Irene Purcell was born August 7, 1896 in Whiting, Indiana. She was convent educated in Wisconsin & attended Chicago's Ann Morgan School. She performed in a Cleveland stock company & toured with Otis Skinner; her Broadway debut came in 1924. She made her film debut in a 1929 1 reel short shot at Paramount's Astoria studios; her performance in David Belasco's penultimate Broadway show garnered her a 1-picture deal with MGM. The resulting Billy Haines comedy did ok business & got her cast in Man in Possession (1931). This still of her & Robert Montgomery was from this film. MGM signed her to a 5-year contract in June 1931 & she was to support Broadway titans, the Lunts, in Noël Coward's Private Lives; alas, Norma Shearer & Robert Montgomery replaced them in the lead roles while Una Merkel played the part initially earmarked for her. MGM dropped her after she made English & French versions of a Buster Keaton film. Her performance in Springtime for Henry at the Hollywood Playhouse lead to films for RKO & Fox, but she returned to NY after appearing in an independent film, Crooked Circle (1932); her last Broadway play was opposite other Hollywood refugees Kenneth MacKenna & Linda Watkins. She toured Australia in The Women & had a relationship with Canadian businessman Yves de Villers. He gave her Fancy Rock Island, one of the Thousand Islands in the Saint Lawrence River. She sold the island to actress Joan Marlowe sometime during World War II for $1 after her relationship with de Villers ended. In 1941, she married Cornell University graduate Herbert F. Johnson at her Lake Shore Drive apartment in Chicago. They lived in Racine, Wisconsin in a house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright named Wingspread. She bore him 2 children & died July 9, 1972 in Racine, Wisconsin. #irenepurcell #robertmontgomery #samwood #hmharwood #pgwodehouse #olivertmarsh #adrian #themaninpossession #mgm #precode #classichollywood #gownsbyadrian #menwithstyle #tuxedo #herbertfjohnson #fancyrockisland #biascut #latergram

Frank Wright Tuttle was born August 6, 1892, in New York City, New York. He graduated from Yale University and became an assistant to the founder of the Coffee House club & Vanity Fair chief editor, Frank Crowninshield. With the help of fellow Coffee House club member & later film producer Walter Wanger, Tuttle got a screenwriting job at Paramount. His first screenplay was for The Kentuckians (1921); he began directing a year later with The Cradle Buster (1922). He worked mostly for Paramount through the 1930s but was loaned several times to Fox Films & United Artists. He directed Clara Bow more than any other director (7 films). From their 1st collaboration, Film Guild's low budget adaptation of a F. Scott Fitzgerald story Grit (1924) to the stress-filled No Limit (1931) which was her 2nd to last film for Paramount, he found her a "dynamic and erratic whirlwind" and "a joy". He also guided singer Bing Crosby to stardom in 6 musical comedies. Crosby’s quick thinking saved Tuttle when the director started passing out in the middle of a script conference; unable to find a knife in his kitchen, Crosby used his bare hands to peel & crush oranges to make juice for the diabetic director. Tuttle did not limit his influence with comedic actors; Tuttle's casting of Alan Ladd in This Gun for Hire (1941) paved the way to Ladd's stardom in his following picture, The Glass Key (1942). Tuttle remained at Paramount until 1944. He then freelanced and made films at 20th Century Fox, Monogram, Universal & Columbia through the late 1940s. His career practically ended when he testified in front of HUAC. Tuttle stated that he was a Communist Party member from 1937 to 1947 and named several screenwriters & director Jules Dassin as fellow Communists; he was betrayed as a “Red” by screenwriter Richard J. Collins. Afterwards, he directed some television episodes before ending his film career with Island of Lost Women (1959). Tuttle married thrice and had several children. He was a lifelong liberal and died January 6, 1963 in Hollywood. This lobby card was from Pleasure Cruise (1933) which he did for Fox and starred Genevieve Tobin & Roland Young.

🔥🔥🔥 Red Dragon Comics #7 🔥🔥🔥(1943). Art by Jack Binder and August Froehlich. Tough book and only seen it available a handful of times. Honestly just happy to own any copy. Issue features all the usual enemies, Hitler, Tojo and Mussolini. It Happened One Night (1934) Gorgeous Clark Gable plays the role of sardonic news reporter Peter Warne, who runs into a spoiled socialite runaway Ellie Westley (Claudette Colbert), and promises to reunite her with her fiancé (who her father strongly dislikes) in exchange for an sensational exposé. Everything’s going great until Ellie realizes that she doesn’t want to reunite anymore, as she’s in love with Peter who feels the same but doesn’t want to reciprocrate as his “principles” get in the way. Despite separation and unraveling of the misunderstandings, Peter now has a choice to make. Why I’d recommend: There’s no such thing as too much of mushy “happily ever afters”. Although the South Asian film industry had some renowned remakes of this classic rom-com [Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin (1991), Chawa Pawa (1959)] and some more, I still keep coming back to this original. Considering it’s a movie of the Pre-Code era, it’s unconventionality is still raw as it was then. Director Frank Capra (Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, It's a Wonderful Life) keeps it tasteful whilst maintaining the trademark Pre-Code innuendos. If you need to be reassured that romance still exists or you’re just plainly a hopeless romantic, take out an hour and forty five minutes of your life for this – you won’t regret. #ClarkGable #ClaudetteColbert #FrankCapra #Precode #ItHappenedOneNight
Reginald Owen was born August 5, 1887 in Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire. He was educated at the City of London school before he dropped out to study acting in London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He made his West End debut as part of the Shakespeare Festival Week in late April 1905 in The Tempest. He then acted in London & on tour; his 1st of 6 silent films was a short film, Henry VIII (1911). During WWI, he fought in the British Artillery. He took over the role of Prince Albert in a Chicago production of The Swan before making his Broadway debut in The Carolinian come November 1925. He made his talking film debut in a now lost adaptation of a F. Scott Fitzgerald story called Pusher-in-the-Face (1929); Fitzgerald supplied the screenplay of this Paramount Astoria studio production. It was shelved for a year; reviews mentioned its poor sound quality. Through Nov. & Dec. 1928, he filmed another Astoria talkie, The Letter (1929), opposite Jeanne Eagels which got great reviews. He returned to Broadway through 1932; his work in Petticoat Influence got him a 1-film deal at Warners; however, he made Man in Possession (1931) for MGM instead. He signed with that studio in 1935 & remain with them as part of their stock company through the mid-1950s. He was a favorite of Garbo's who had him replace Alan Mowbray as Stiva in her sound adaptation of Anna Karenina (1935). Come the 1950s, he acted on television but made several comebacks in Walt Disney films/programs & on Broadway; he also wrote several books. He died of a heart attack on November 5, 1972 in Boise, Idaho. He married thrice & died while visiting his stepson. This still of Clive Brook & Reginald Owen (l. to r.) was from RKO's Where Sinners Meet (1934), a film adaptation of A.A. Milne's The Dover Road; it was first announced when Brook was at Paramount. #reginaldowen #clivebrook #jwalterruben #aamilne #wheresinnersmeet #thedoverroad #rko #precode #englishman #menwithstyle #latergram
