Practice, practice, practice. Perfect practice, makes perfect...... and with posing, you can’t really practice enough. This is far from perfect, but each time I do it, video it, analyse it, and make the necessary adjustments, it gets a little better. Whereas you can certainly overtrain in the gym, but you can’t really over practice your presentation - how effectively you present your physique can be the difference in how you place, and in my 30+ years in bodybuilding, I’ve seen many less impressive & smaller physiques beat better competitors simply by showcasing what they do have to its best effect. So, nailing the compulsory poses and quarter turns is an absolute must. Knowing your strengths and highlighting those whilst disguising any weak points will also make a difference - this applies to the compulsory poses as well as those in your posing routine. Sometimes it’s simply a matter of a small change in foot placement, or how you hold your hands, even how you hold your fingers in open handed poses - all these small details combine to form an overall image. And it’s not enough to have an array of perfectly positioned poses - how you transition into and out of them also makes a huge difference; everything should tie together and flow.
Doing 3 rotations of the compulsory poses and quarter turns is also hard work - endeavouring to control all the muscle groups on show, tensing from head to toe, maintaining your balance all whilst smiling as if it were effortless & easy, takes it out of you - listen to me blowing like a surfacing whale 🐳😂
