I can already sense gyms are looking a lot less populated to a few weeks ago. Those new years resolutions are appearing more distant than the Spring. If you are one of those people that had every intention of hitting the floor running but have ended up just hitting the floor then raise that motivation again. In my experience those with longer more realistic goals do achieve them. Accountability is paramount as too many look for excuses. Set yourself small physical goals and stay motivated to achieve them. If the bar is set too high you can be doomed to failure. You wouldnt enter a marathon if you were struggling to run 10k. So be realistic. Dont focus on what others can do just concentrate on what you can do. Too many people throw themselves into complex or intensive exercise regimes they cannot sustain. I try to encourage postural strength as the first and most important goal. This helps achieve more demanding physical goals. Minimal complex movements so perfectly safe to train alone if necessary. Upper crossed syndrome is something I'm noticing more and more of. You guys probably don't realize I'm also assessing your posture when you come to see me. Having just a slight forward tilt of the head can add a bowling ball's amount of weight to your spine leading to distortions and eventually pain. Postural stability training is an important area for future growth in the field of massage therapy.
TIGHT MUSCLES THAT MAY BE THE CAUSE OF LATERAL PELVIC TILT There are several kinds of pelvis tilts that are unhealthy for our body: 1. There is the anterior pelvic tilt, where the front of the pelvis is tilted downwards. 2. There is also the posterior pelvic tilt, which is the opposite of the anterior pelvic tilt, where the front of the pelvis is tilted upwards. However, the lateral pelvic tilt is unique, in that the pelvis is tilted to the side where one side will be higher than the other. Symptoms of a Lateral Pelvic Tilt Other than one hip being higher than the other, the presence of a lateral pelvic tilt can have a drastic chain effect which reverberates not only from the pelvis downwards, but also up to the shoulders. Uneven Hips โ€“ This is the obvious symptom. Uneven Shoulders โ€“ From the image above, you will see how the hip which is higher will usually result in the shoulder on the same side, being lower than the other side. Leg Length Differences โ€“ Someone with a lateral pelvic tilt may think they have one leg longer than the other, or one leg shorter than the other. However, this is a myth as it is the tilt in the pelvis which makes it feel like the hip that is lower down is longer because the other leg doesnโ€™t reach the ground when you stand. Leg Rotation โ€“ You can see from the diagram that the bones of the leg usually rotate internally as a result of a lateral pelvic tilt. It can also start all the way down at the foot, typically one foot will be pronated where the ankle is rolled inwards, this could be a flat foot or a collapsed arch. Causes of a lateral pelvic tilt - do you sit on one bum cheek more than the other? Do you favour leaning on one leg more then the other when standing? Horse riders - do you sit tilted in the saddle? Lean one way more than the other? Or feel that you need your stirrups at different lengths? I love seeing results in just a 60min session. This client is a young woman who came in complaining of plantar fasciitis symptoms. As I normally do with first-time clients, I measured for imbalance. As you can see, her most noticeable variation was in her gluteal folds, at least 1.5โ€ hike on the left side. In lower cross syndrome the pelvis sits at an anterior tilt, which can mean that the hamstrings become long and weak. When the hamstrings are long they can begin to feel tight as if you need to stretch them. But if youโ€™re stretching them over and over and nothing changes they might be trying to stabilize you due to lack of midline strength (weak abdominals), which often presents in lower cross syndrome along with the anterior pelvic tilt. Instead of stretching your hamstrings, try unloading them and activating the abdominals. Showing my personal example of how bodies can be drastically different from each other (esp from professional models) and from right to left. Since my primary jobs have always been at desks, except for a few torturous temp jobs on my feet, I've always had a hard time sitting properly at keyboards. I don't blame myself for this. A long time ago, I realized furniture does not fit me no matter how many adjustments they have. They are generally built for taller, thinner bodies. My feet dangle so I have to prop them or sit on them (usually in sukasana even if I'm at a restaurant). If I lower the chair seat for my feet, my elbows are forced up and my shoulders shrug.
