Our 2018 Herschel Museum of Astronomy’s small budget exhibition has been rated one of the best in the country!
Wonder Women of Space exhibition has been shortlisted for a National Museums and Heritage Award in the category for projects with a limited budget achieving the biggest impact, Winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on 15 May.
Wonder Woman of Space was an exhibition run on a shoe-string, funded by a small Bath and North East Somerset Council Heritage Grant. We had big ideas and wanted to link with 2018 celebrations of Women’s Suffrage by focussing on female space heroines and showing how these role models inspire young people today and change the way we see the world. We also wanted to forge new partnerships with astronomical organisations both locally and worldwide.
The one-room exhibition was supported by a programme of family-focussed and space-themed craft activities plus talks from female scientists and several day and night-time stargazing opportunities (in partnership with Bath Astronomers Group). Public lectures were a sell-out and school visits took off – in part due to our successful partnership with Bath Astronomers. For the grand total of £980 and some clever use of social media, the popularity of Wonder Women of Space resulted in a 22% increase in visitor numbers over the year; a 68% rise in followers on Twitter (and 19% on Facebook); first visits from astronomers at Ohio State Univerisity, Royal Society London, Paris Astronomical Society and trustees of the University of Arizona; academic partnerships with ESA, NASA and the British Space Centre; features in national journals and several delightful star-gazing sessions with AgeUK B&NES.
To use an appropriate metaphor we are over the moon at this recognition of our hard work and creative efforts.
We urge any of you to visit the Herschel Museum soon and discover for yourselves the magic of developments in space exploration and the contributions made by brother and sister William and Caroline Herschel.
Details of our new exhibition and events are on our websites and will be shared here shortly...
** Brownie points to anyone who can guess my Dad in the group photo** We have come so far!! And we are still going!
Flashback to 6 years ago... He's gone, the house is quiet and It's time.
Time to immerse myself in His world. His genius. His work. Time to remember that even though he is gone, I have 37 years of his work orbiting above my head. It's 11 days after my 31st bday. How is this real? Cancer does not discriminate.
I am not alone I remind myself. He left a legacy. He left a mark. Just jump in Heather, you'll feel better
As I sift through the piles of papers the tears subside to awe as I flip through JPL newsletters and "old" photos- wow we've come so far. I imagine what it felt like being him seeing those first photos of those beautiful Rings come across the screen.
You did it! The team did it! Here is your genius in action. Forever. Well done!! He would work on projects that didn't touch down until after he passed. He would have loved those Cassini photos. Bet he has a better view now ;) On days like this when I miss my Rocketman I remember the amazing times.
Back lots of JPL in the 80s playing with prototypes. 2 am trips to death valley to see the Milky way and JPL picnic days listening to the Shop talk of the adults around me.
Did they know then they were game changers? My Dad never had an ego about what he did. I wonder if he understood what he gave to this world and what he gave to me. Until the last satellite stops transmitting, I always have a piece of him orbiting the cosmos beaming down.
He taught me to think beyond my own nose. To see the BIG picture and to appreciate the magnificent speck of cosmic dust that I was ( Calvin and Hobbes reference)
My humanitarism comes from him. My thirst for knowledge comes from him. Everything good that I am, comes from him
Xo Rocketman. Miss you bunches today.
I see Neil Degrasse Tyson in 3 days. M o o d ✨or✨ l i f e s t y l e?
Only four more days to go you guys until it’s over! 🙃
How has this Mercury retrograde treated you? Is your life currently a dumpster fire, are you finding yourself simply stuck in a haze, or have you finally stifled the smoking flames and are starting to see more clearly now? 🔮🔥🌤
Personally this month has been very tough on me and thrown a lot of unexpected, and frankly traumatic, events my way. The beauty of being put in such an uncomfortable position though is realizing that we can take these situations, are able to process them, and most importantly use them to learn and g r o w.🌱
If an experience feels foreign or outside your comfort zone, then you have a responsibility to let that uneasy/disagreeable/awkward restlessness wash over you - and you go through it. Whenever there may be a moment in your life where you feel really really uncomfortable, just breathe and keep going through it. You’re stronger than you know.
(PS. Thank you to those who have supported me during these transitions in my life, as it truly means more than I could ever possibly describe with a few simple words. 🙏 ♡)
