Tulips are back and I am in love.😍🌷
“‘At one time I travelled a good deal, and I tried to read all the best loved children’s classics in all the countries I visited,’ explained Sebastian. ‘I had an idea that if you read the books they write for their children, you will know something about the soul of a people that you could not know otherwise.’” from The Heart of the Family, by Elizabeth Goudge.
I was thinking of this idea - that you can know something about the soul of a people from their best-loved children’s books - as I read Jane of Lantern Hill for the first time. I’m willing to make the bold claim that there is no children’s author as closely associated with Canada as Lucy Maud Montgomery. Canadians, do you agree with me?
So what did I glean from this book? I think Canadians must have a love of nature, but also for home and hearth; a love for honest work; and a deep disdain for snobbery and falseness. Oh yes, and let’s not forget a love for homemade pie.
