Just because I’m a personal trainer does not mean that I don’t need the help of other trained professionals. A year ago, I made the decision that I wanted to a be as strong as I have ever been come my 40th birthday. Do I think this is due to a fear of aging? Damn straight… I never want to have to sit on a public toilet seat in my life. I will hover until I die. Halfway joking aside, I believe in the research that says that weight bearing exercise is increasingly important as we age. And if there’s one thing I have observed about getting older, being a healthy and fit older person looks a lot easier than the alternative. This time last year, I knew this is what I wanted for myself, but taking the time to figure out how to even start felt overwhelming. I thought, if there is one thing to hire an expert for, it’s to help me to develop new behaviors and learn new skills that will enable my body for years to come. But I really don’t like gyms and I especially don’t like beefy 23 year old trainers who are staring at their phones while they “train” their clients. . Enter Andrew, a 38 year old husband to Jen and dad to three kids. A dude who majored in History and Philosophy, went into Finance and then decided he wanted to be a personal trainer… all that to say, he’s wicked smart and his life circumstances make him the antithesis of beefy meat head trainer (beefy meat heads are my least favorite of all human archetypes). . I’ve been working with Andrew twice/week for the past year. What’s changed? . I prioritize myself. Time in the gym is now just a part of what I do. It’s one thing I do for myself before all else. . I’m stronger. I lift heavy things. I challenge myself in ways I haven’t before and it’s liberating. . I have no before and after pics (that wasn’t the goal, remember… I simply don’t want to sit on toilet seats), but my “just give in and buy jeans that fit” jeans are too big. . Most importantly, I work with someone who understands that everyone is unique, especially women with a whole host of reasons why they’re exhausted. He genuinely cares about the whole person and understands the myriad of variables that impact all aspects of wellbeing. . Social media detox & 3 day fasting coming up this weekend! - Doing a wee bit if a detox this week with my training and my food so I thought at the same time i would do it with social media aswel. Im going to take this week to really restructure my goals when it comes to training & nutrition, to really plan out what i want to achieve in the next year. Ill be going towards the more Keto/ low carb approach with a carb refeed at night time as i still think this is the best way for me to optimize my training and energy levels. - Im also going to take a wee break off social media as i find im feeling like i have to post rather than want to. PUSH dayyy 💪🏼💪🏼 This was my second time working out this week, because i’ve felt terrible most of the week. I was sick, injured my back (in a dumb, embarrassing way lol), and was on my time of the month, 😂😓 all while it was my spring break 😕 It felt good to go to the gym and get a workout in. Of all the concepts and practices that are involved in the exercise and fitness arena, progressive overload is one of the most important, yet often the most misused or misunderstood. . The reason it’s important is a very simple one. Without it, your body does not adapt and will never get bigger or stronger beyond a certain point. . Think about it this way. If you went to the gym and did the same exercise for the same length of time, using the same weight, or running for the same length of time without any changes, what would happen? Probably nothing at all. Your body won’t learn to push itself and it certainly wouldn’t adapt to the stresses and strains you’d place upon it. . If you’re simply wanting to maintain the physique you’ve got now, then carry on, but that’s not what we’re here for is it! Progressive overload means that you are continually increasing the demands on your muscles in order to make gains in their strength, size and endurance. The harder you work them, the stronger you become.
