At the risk of sounding repetitive: what matters most (to me), is not whether you can do the position/movement, but whether you can do the position/movement *well*. This may well be a re-phrasing of 'it's not the destination, but the journey'. Our Instagram journey with the Static Bear Crawl as a vehicle for developing and improving proprioception has come to an end (or has it?) with this last installment: the alternating heel/hand lift-offs. Of the progressions we've made our way through thus far, this one has by far the greatest demands for stability and control. And thinking about it, I really could have done a better job of demonstrating ninja-like control...but I've opted to leave it like this as a bit of a Van Halen brown M&M's thing: Yes, you can totally get away with the passable version that I've demonstrated here. My lack of cartilage and labrum can only excuse so much. But, for the circus artist-athletes I work with, we're aiming for a higher standard. We're aiming for the "balance a cup of hot coffee (or whatever your favorite hot beverage may be) on your pelvis without spilling any" standard, because that represents some seriously badass scapular stability and rotary lumbopelvic stability and control. For the hypermobile circus artist-athlete, this is the level of badassery that we're aiming for in order to keep your joints healthy and happy and where you want them to be. Also: I'd like to come back to the idea that this progression is over. It's not. There are many additional options for us from here (and not all of them involve crawling!) Not that I have anything against crawling...rather, I think that's a particularly important and valuable exercise in and of itself. Using the stick while doing this simple fundamental exercise helps you feel whether or not your pelvis is staying stable while picking up your legs. The feedback of feeling the stick helps you connect your brain and nervous system to your body. This exercise is great for anyone, but I'm using it to help my client who has Cerebral Palsy find a stable pelvis while working her hip flexors. Great job, Chelsea!!
Next Progression in the Static Bear Crawl adventure: shoulder taps There are shoulder taps and then there are shoulder taps. Most of the time when I see them done, I wonder what the rush is... Remember: the whole point to this progression is *not* to get to a moving bear crawl as fast as you can. The point is to develop super badass stability--static stability to start, progressing eventually to dynamic stability...but at all times, the super-badass, rock-solid variety. Why? Well, if you're a hypermobile circus artist-athlete, it is in part because super-badass, rock-solid dynamic stability is awesome. And, in part, it's because you have to have super-badass, rock-solid dynamic joint stability to keep your joints healthy and happy. Technically, the same applies to the non-hypermobile circus artist-athlete, except the non-hypermobile crowd can get away with only average dynamic stability because their joint capsules are inherently stiffer. Anyway...this is the step I would progress to after the heel-lifts because you'll need the additional rotary core stability to keep everything still as the static arm/shoulder kicks into high gear to hold your torso and pelvis still. The goal here is "balance a mug of your favorite hot beverage on your pelvis" still. Or a martini glass of something fancy. It's really a matter of preference. Either way: your torso and pelvis need to stay still. And level. Progression: static bear crawl with heel lifts This is so easy. And not at all easy...which is kind of the point. Because, again, it doesn't matter so much if you can *do* the position/movement, what matters more is *how* you do it. Allow me to explain: For our purposes--which, you may recall, are to use this as a vehicle for improving proprioception in hypermobile circus artist-athletes--the details matter. Pay attention to what your shoulders are doing to keep your body still. But don't be passive about it--actively decide to keep your torso still. What does that challenge ask your shoulders to do? Notice whether one shoulder has to do more work than the other. (Hint: if you're planning on taking one heel/foot off the floor, one shoulder will feel it more than the other). Once you feel that, can you dial up the amount of tension you're developing in your shoulders to make the position really freaking solid? And then there's your hips. Can you dig your toes into the floor and engage your glutes? Can you drive your toes into the floor without moving your torso, so that you really feel the tension ramp up in your glutes? Now do the same with your quads. One side is going to have to generate a lot more isometric tension compared to the side you're planning to lift. Tip: to lift your heel/foot, just bend at the knee so that you can keep the thigh still. I love seeing results in just a 60min session. This client is a young woman who came in complaining of plantar fasciitis symptoms. As I normally do with first-time clients, I measured for imbalance. As you can see, her most noticeable variation was in her gluteal folds, at least 1.5โ€ hike on the left side. Everything is connected! When the knee hurts, notice what is happening above and below it. One of my go-to treatments for knee pain is called PELVIC STABILIZATION. Most people have a slightly shorter or longer leg, and without treatment that imbalance can cause low back pain, knee pain, or ankle pain, etc. Stabilizing the pelvis is important work. Sometimes we have to stretch and bend in uncomfortable ways. Sometimes it's important to embrace the scary, to sit in that uncomfortable pose for awhile longer, all in hopes of achieving balance. Finally found some time to float @truerestchico and WOW what a stunning facility! Beautiful Himalayan salt lamps everywhere, gorgeous float tanks, and an aromatherapy oxygen bar to end the session and bring you back to reality! I also got a little gift pack on the way out ๐Ÿค— I have been to a couple float spas and this was, by far, my best experience yet. For those of you that have a hard time clearing your brain: they play relaxing music for the first 15 min of the float, then 45 min of silent darkness, and 5 min till the end the music comes back on to gently bring you back to reality. I always feel an incredible ease after every float but this one really took me to another dimension. If you havenโ€™t experienced a float I HIGHLY recommend trying @truerestchico !
