There's all walks of life there for all different reasons with the same objective.... #fitness ... Back to me - when I started @tpsmalden 51 weeks ago, strict OHP was a movement I had never done. Riddled with nagging shoulder injuries and impaired movement and mobility, this type of press was never an interest of mine. ... After, just a couple months, my shoulders were starting to feel better and corrections in movement were being made. I was maxed out at about 105 lbs. even for light volume. To be honest, my ambition was only to hit 135 lbs comfortably in sets. ... Fast forward to the last couple of weeks. My OHP has really started to clique and I have surpassed 135 lbs. Today, I hit 205 lbs in warmups for 1 rep. I ended up failing it during one of my working sets, but used 195 lbs thru the rest. THAT'S A 100 LB GAIN IN JUST A YEAR!! ... I will own 225 very soon. Once I hit that - the goal for next year will be 315 !!! ... Side note - I lift with and use my shoulders all day at work. January 16th, 2019 Week 2 day 2 of my second cycle of Calgary barbells 8 week program. Starting off with an 83 kg OHP at 83 kg bodyweight. 1x bodyweight press milestone achieved at last 185 kg/408 lbs 4 x 3 conventional deadlifts all at rpe 7ish. Huge improvement from last week. Squat every day - day 8 Box squats: Warmup: 8/5/4/3/2 Daily min: 245lbs x 1 Daily max: 275lbs x 1 x 8 Dropsets: 265lbs x 2 x 4 OHP: multiple sets Very happy with today's workout. Not because I hit some particularly great numbers, but because to my surprise I had no real groin pain for the first time since I started this program. Just some minor discomfort, largely alleviated by foam rolling between sets. As a result, I was able to get a lot of "practice" at ~85% of 1RM, which is the main idea behind this program. I might have even overdone it a little with 13 working sets, but after nearly two weeks of just barely going through the motions, it felt nice to get a lot of volume in. OHP vid is from yesterday's workout, 155lbs x 1 (plus bonus push press), tying my personal best. These will, among other benefits, give my shoulders experience functioning in internal rotation regardless of scapula positioning. . . When will this be beneficial? Sometimes you have to see the side by side to find the improvements. Today's 395 (bottom video) felt much slower than last week (top video) but after seeing the comparison it was noticeably quicker. I miss grooved a little and still put it up faster. My descent was faster too which is awesome since that has been one of my areas of weakness. I also see a consistent sticking point that I can start working on. All good things. Taking videos of your lifts is not only useful for bragging about your gainz on social media 😜. It is also useful for checking form and technique. I’m not ashamed to admit that I can be a bit of a ‘motor moron’ on occasion, so taking and reviewing video helps me keep form creep in check.⠀ ⠀ During a recent workout, I watched the video I’d taken during my first set of the seated press, and noticed that my grip was too narrow, causing my elbows to flair and make my forearms less vertical than they should be. ⠀ ⠀ On the next set, I made a small grip width adjustment by moving my hands out a bit wider, and that made a big difference in how the lift looked and felt. 🚨THORACIC MOBILITY TO IMPROVE OVERHEAD MOTIONS🚨 —— Great post by @steficohen on improving thoracic mobility for overhead motions! —— Your body will find a way to achieve a particular motion, without necessarily taking into account optimal movement🤸🏻‍♂️. For example, you want to do an overhead press, a pull up, a handstand, or simply reach a higher cabinet🙋🏼‍♀️, your body will take the path of least resistance to get there. What most commonly happens is that as you reach overhead, your lower back needs to hyperextend in order for you to achieve the final degrees of motion necessary to put your hands over your head🙋🏻‍♂️. - Over time, we start developing increased stiffness in our upper back, and instability or hypermobility in our lower back, which over time can lead to a wide array of issues. The higher you need to raise your arms, the higher the demand of thoracic motion required to maintain proper relative shoulder alignment. - 👉🏼 The following 4 exercises are aimed at improving thoracic rotation and extension in order to improve overhead positions, ⬇️ low back pain, and ⬇️ incidence of shoulder injuries: . 1️⃣ Supine dead bug variation: squeeze a med ball or foam roller between your legs, keep you ribcage DOWN, don’t let your lower back come off the mat. . 2️⃣ Standing resisted rotations: lock your pelvis in place and aim at generating all the motion from your upper back. . 3️⃣ Segmental rolling: roll segment by segment, flex and extend all the way. . 4️⃣ Rocked back quadruped rotation: open all the way and close all the way. - - 🔥TAG AND SHARE WITH FRIENDS THAT COULD IMPROVE THORACIC MOBILITY AND OVERHEAD MOTIONS🔥
