"Against the Windmills" - One of the earliest compositions on the album. The instrumentals were ready by February 2016, with vocals and lyrics reworked, tweaked, overdubbed as late as summer 2018. The song was probably composed in a small countryside church during summer 2015.
The folkish, fairly straightforward instrumentation and the relatively paced rhythm of the song constitute a solid impression of what "Songs for Unravelling Lovers" was originally intended to become: an album striving for immediacy and an organic feel, heavily inspired by the long tradition of acoustic singer-songwriters and the revivalist folk movement of the early 00's which eventually fused its way into the indie underground.
The moody, longing atmosphere ringing from the spacious guitar and the "OK Computer"-inspired electric piano, however, hint at a darker side to the bright melodies, reflected by the ruthless self-sarcasm of the lyrics. Enclosed within one big everflowing metaphor, the author's aimless wander in search for romantic realisation is described as the travels and hardships of a gull whose fate is to continuously get mauled by endless windmills until numbness, or death by freezing, catches him whilst traveling to Holland one last time. Love is ephemeral like a sharp slashing, masochistic and delusional like a fight against symbolism and simple, monolithic aims such as self-realisation and emotional contentedness; and yet alluring, tempting, addictive.
