Sufferfest pt. II - That balloon you can never really get to inflate.
A year ago @colincwilson
invited me to help lead an over night trip to Owl’s Head Mountain in the middle of January. That trip was dubbed a Sufferfest for many reasons, but mainly because it was Owl’s Head, it included the Lincoln Woods trail and it was supposed to seriously lack views. The trip exceeded expeditions in every way. We were cold, tired, it was cloudy most of the time and all the views did in fact include trees. As that trip was ending and we were making our way back to the parking lot we shared the Lincoln Woods Trail with a couple other people. I was chatting them up and they said they had camped out just under Bond Cliff night before. It looked like they had suffered for it and with that seed was planted. This past Saturday, exactly one year after our original sufferfest, we parked at the Lincoln Woods trailhead again and set out to camp just under Bond Cliff during the Nor’easter. More to come about Sufferfest pt. II and film to follow.
Outside. Something so accessible to most of us, yet often left unappreciated or unexplored by so many. To me, it is somewhere that can shed positivity on my mood no matter how I’m feeling. Whether it’s a 5 minute stroll to close my eyes and just breathe in the fresh air or a 5 hour strenuous journey overcoming challenges, it always add positive value to my everchanging mindset. — Yesterday I was feeling exhausted and didn’t want to get myself back up in the late afternoon. But I sluggishly packed a bag and brought myself “to the shortest trail closest to me” as a compromise with myself. Once I was out there, a natural rise in energy and an upwards shift in my mood occurred without even realizing it. In that moment, I forgot that I didn’t want to get up just a few minutes prior. — Sometimes getting up and started is the hardest part, but I can’t remember a time that I’ve heard someone say they regretted the time they spent outdoors afterwards. Opt outside 🌿

Peaceful (and stormy) woods ❄️☺️
Not letting the cold temps keep us trapped indoors.
I love early mornings, and what you can discover only in those moments before the days starts
No roof top tent required.

almost forgot how entirely not zen it is to climb with @joey_maloney
Beautiful day at the falls 💦 Bentley was so happy to find big icicles to chew on.
Life persists among the wasteland, like a shining green beacon of hope. The once molten anger has aged and turned to stone, yet the stubborn growth of hope continues.
Ready to earn your turns? Train mind and body. Hire a guide. Strap on the skis. Bootpack around the surrounding vertical mountain walls. Then ski off-piste the 3000m descent of Vallée Blanche to Chamonix, France. Embrace the beauty. Mais oui. Again please. 🙏 #whpwanderlust #earnyourturns
With the Sterling Ridge Trailhead parking in questionable condition, we adjusted and instead hiked the Ramapo Dunderberg & Blue Disc Trails to Claudius Smith's Den in Harriman.
We're fortunate to have so many options in close proximity! We arrived at the updated location within 15 minutes!
It rained early on during the hike, but after hanging at the den for a bit, the rain subsided.
We were treated to an excellent winterscape - albeit a slushy, slippery one. The snow shoes remain clean!
Thank you to all who were proactive and joined the adventure today!

“Then it seemed to me that the Sierra should be called, not the Nevada or Snowy Range, but the Range of Light. And after ten years of wandering and wondering in the heart of it, rejoicing in its glorious floods of light, the white beams of the morning streaming through the passes, the noonday radiance on the crystal rocks, the flush of the alpenglow, and the irised spray of countless waterfalls, it still seems above all others the Range of Light.” - John Muir (1912) 🏔
Playing around with lines this morning. Elephant Mountain, pen and ink, as seen from our window in the Treehouse.
Ooof, somewhere near the border of Iowa and Nebraska, I caught a nasty stomach virus. The last week has involved me curled up in a ball for hours on end, feeling particularly alone and vulnerable; driving over 1,900 miles through frosty prairies, ranchland, and farmland, and sand dunes; interviewing a mother and grown daughter, whose stories of struggle and perseverance were as haunting as their kindness and humbleness were warming; and feeling a rush of love for humanity with each friendly wave I got from a stranger on the roads of Western Nebraska (this region takes the cake on waving-on-the-road frequency...easily over 50% of drivers waved to me, even on highways when we were going 75mph).
All while trying not to throw up. :) It was a hard week, but a sparkling one nonetheless.
Will get back to my “regular” posts this week, picking the thread back up in Michigan from July’s travels. It will be a little dose of summer heat to thaw us out.

Who knew there were unicorns in AZ? Or Snow? 🦄🏜🌵🏔 •
We had a totally different hike planned today but my lip is blistered from the sun. We decided to try and avoid a shadeless desert hike and head up high in the mountain. As we drove up higher, the landscape was every changing. The cactus followed us up for a few thousand feet but we began to see mountain grass and less sand/dirt. Then the cactus changed to evergreen trees and even Aspens. We could see snow on the mountain tops but it was cool to finally be out hiking in it. The temp dropped more than 20 degrees from when we started but the sun was powerful at the elevation. I had a makeshift buff over my lips to try and not do more damage but after being in a car on the drive up, we needed to get out and hike up to the top! Mt Lemon Summit Complete @k.oolvibes
As I paddled my way southwards, I knew of a few of the wild residents I must keep a keen eye out for. Warnings of the cottonmouth was often on my mind as I pulled in close to the over hanging branches and into the brush that edged the shores. I watched for the bubbles emerging from the depths of the murky waters, that of an alligator resting just below the surface. My ears perked to attention, like that of the ever attentive white tailed deer, for the rustling and snorts of an approaching boar. Little had I thought, though, of the one predator I was so weary of back home in the mountains. Bears too called these woods and bayous home a shocking surprise. I thought to myself, why wouldn’t they be there and why had I assumed otherwise? One of those moments nature reminded me assumptions out here, with lack of knowledge, can put you in potential dangers. “If you are not filled with overflowing love, compassion and goodwill for all creatures living wild in nature, you will never know true happiness.” #pauloxton

In just a few hours we'll be heading to Sterling Ridge for our next Proactive social hike!
It's looking like we might not get the chance to use our snow shoes after all.
But, as always, we hike rain or shine...or snow...or ice. Be proactive, join the adventure!
We found snow in Tucson! Most of our friends in family back east and in the Midwest are getting some fresh powder.. so we hiked up to 9100’ to enjoy some views and snow. Even though it’s winter, doesn’t mean the adventure stop! Get outside and enjoy the beauty around you! While you’re doing it, tag @backwardshatforwardthinking @bebold_seekadventure @jennythetrailhead
