A glimpse of this year’s featured artists at our 3rd annual gala! The very talented @natalielauraking
! Natalie King is an queer Anishinaabe artist based in Toronto. Influenced by colour, form, shape and identity her practice ranges from drawing, painting, print-making and installation. She is currently an undergraduate at OCAD University.
Centered through a queer lens involving portrayals of femme identities. Natalie King’s works are about embracing the ambiguity and multiplicities of identity within the queer femme experience. King’s works are a portrayal of life with it’s both harsh realities and the resilience of the human spirit. These figures are stylistic and representative of King’s life and experiences, often including members of her community, friends, partner and family members. The paintings move through various elements of life, including family, loss, joy and pain. These queer bodies are centred within the paintings as monumental figures that represent community, resiliency and power. Femme voices and stories are not at the forefront of queer discourse, however these narratives within King’s work start to create a life of their own and often dictate themselves. "I am passionate about using queer femme identities as the focus of my work because having these bodies represented in a way that recognises my community and experiences can contribute to a narrative that is powerful and honest. I make this work to embrace femininity in all forms, and reconcile the trauma, micro and macro aggressions and complacency towards femme identities. I want to portray my realities of being a queer woman that is femme identified.
Working to educate others and affirming one’s own experiences takes continual effort, especially for non binary femmes, disabled femmes, and femmes of colour. This emotional labour pushes us to seek each other out, validate our experiences, and form a stronger bond and community based on support and encouragement. #oneofakindart #embraceyourself #empoweringwomen #stopchildabuse #artfundraiser @fullcircleatc @thegatehousetoronto @socialknowhow @libertygroup @toyotaonthepark #awareness #peersupport
