Popped into @roughpeelmusic
whilst doing some Christmas shopping and ended up picking up three very different records that represent aspects of the early/mid 00’s UK hip-hop scene that I really miss (and miss feeling a part of). John Kennedy (who’s ‘Way I Feel’ Feat. Karen Wilson 12” I picked up here) was on Rae & Christian’s Grand Central imprint and later moved to Bristol (having been booked there by my then flatmate). Grand Central also had Only Child (not a hip-hop project per se but on a label renowned for it), who was also one half of The Unabombers (who became one of my favourite DJ duos (after they played at the club that I worked (and occasionally played) at). This release, 2003’s ‘Addicted’ features Veba (who also sings on ‘Spellbound’ and ‘Swan Song’ off of Rae & Christian’s epochal ‘Northern Sulphuric Soul’ LP from 1998), so was a must have. Last up, Nextmen Feat. Rodney P’s ‘I’ll Try’. I’ve got a couple of flyers from nights that I played on the same bill as Nextmen (in an empty back room, whilst everyone piled downstairs to watch them) and will pretty much buy anything with Rodney P. This seems to be an early one of theirs (‘99/‘00?) and a more straight-up hip-hop outing than their later breaks/bass oriented outings. #grandcentralrecords #nextmen #ukhiphop #12inchsingle #secondhandrecords #recordcollection #recordcollector #vinylcollector #vinylcollection #vinyljunkie
