For some reason, I have an interest in presidential assassinations. Did you know that Robert Todd Lincoln has a connection to 3 of the 4 assassinations of United States 🇺🇸 Presidents?
Buffalo is where the 25th President, William McKinley, was assassinated in September 1901. In an era before secret service agents were commonplace, McKinley held a meet and greet in the Temple of Light at the Pan-American Exposition. Anyone could attend and shake his hand, including one Leon Czolgosz who waited in line with the revolver seen here.
At first, it looked like McKinley would survive. The President and the Assassin by Scott Miller is a great book on the subject. Conspiracies abound, about the act and the death.
Neither the Temple of Light nor the house where McKinley finally died still exist. The Exposition buildings were designed to be temporary. The private home was demolished in 1957. .
Oh, and if you’re a Neil Patrick Harris fan, I recommend finding online him singing The Ballad of Czolgosz from Steven Sondheim’s musical Assassins.
