40 years ago today this ad ran in the LA Times. 12/15/78. Cinema changed forever upon its release. One of my favourite byproducts of it - mega producers like Kevin Feige grew up inspired by and driven to recreate the magic of the Richard Donner/Chris Reeve tale. Here we are in 2018 with 20+ Feige produced Marvel films and absolutely no sign of slowing down (and that’s just the MCU movies). We also have a long a storied tradition of paying homage to big blue and his adventures with Lois across countless mediums... most recently with Hoechlin and Tulloch’s final scenes together in the Fortress of Solitude during the Elseworlds crossover. Superman The Movie was true movie magic. Even the music is still as impactful as it was back in the day. What a legacy. • • • • #SupermanTheMovie #supermanthemovie40th #Superman1977 #DcComics #ChristopherReeve #MargotKidder #GeneHackman #MarlonBrando #nedbeatty #GlennFord #JohnWilliams #RichardDonner #ChineseTheatre #70mm #ClarkKent #KalEl #Krypton

Gore Verbinski's Rango is a wonder among animated films. Naturally the colourful, larger than life medium lends itself to the eyes, ears and hearts of children, which is the direction most of them take. But Rango presents a mature, raunchy, surreal, absurd spectacle rife with a mischievous buzz and peppered with laughs just bordering on the inappropriate, even though they'd go right over their heads anyway. This film broke the record for how many times my jaw hit the floor seeing what they could do with the visuals. It's detailed, meticulous, gorgeously rendered and beautifully crafted, not to mention speckled with subtle references to other films, literary works and themes that Verbinski no doubt holds dear and uses to amplify the story nicely. Johnny Depp gives wit, endearing naivety and a sense of childlike wonder to his creation of Rango, a little lizard in the big desert, violently thrown from a car wreck into the greatest adventure of his life, and the archetypal heroes journey. He wanders through the baking Mojave desert into the town of Dirt, inhabited by sassy, loveable creatures modelled after all our favourite western characters and carefully constructed from the biological blueprint of wildlife in that area. He blunders his way into becoming the sheriff, and leads the whole town on a quest to locate their most sought after resource: Aqua. Verbinski directs with a snappy, take no prisoners sense of humour, throwing joke after joke after one liner after tongue in cheek nod at us, until we feel so bombarded with fantastic imagery, brilliant voice acting and just plain fun, that we more than feel like we're getting our money's worth. Each animal is beautifully designed, from the evil Rattlesnake Jake (Bill Nighy having a ball with a mini gun tail and evil amber eyes), to Beans (a fellow lizard and love interest for our scaly hero), to the sleazy mayor (Ned Beatty, that old turtle), to a rampaging band of bank robbing moles led by a blind Harry Dean Stanton. The cast includes everyone from Timothy Olyphant to Stephen Root, Ray Winstone, Abigail Breslin, Isla Fisher, Lew Temple, Ian Abercrombie, Gil Birmingham and Verbinski himself in multiple roles.

40 years ago today, this superhero classic was released. I remember the first time watching this at my grandma’s house when I was around maybe 5 years old and being hooked on it ever since. It was one of the first things that introduced me to Superman the character (aside from some comics and toys I had of him at the time). Over the years, it has become one of my all time favorite movies. Christopher Reeve gave an unbelievable performance as both Clark Kent and the Man of Steel. The rest of the cast including the likes of screen legends Marlon Brando (Jor-El), Gene Hackman (Lex Luthor), Ned Beatty (Otis), Glenn Ford (Jonathan Kent), Terence Stamp (General Zod) and so on. Margot Kidder as Lois Lane was fun and I enjoyed the chemistry between her and Reeve. I was always fascinated by the flying scenes with Superman and how amazing it looked on screen at the time. The story is structured very well into sort of a three part movie, first with Krypton then Smallville with the rest of it being the Metropolis story. Perhaps, the most memorable thing for me has always been the unforgettable score by the one John Williams. His opening theme is arguably the most iconic superhero theme to date. I still catch myself humming it to this day. I think I might watch this later today to celebrate the 40th birthday of this classic film.
Pues si, lo que os voy a decir ahora hace daño y sobretodo a los de mi generación, hoy hace 40 años se estrenaba en EEUU #SUPERMAN Para mi la mejor película de superhéroes de la historia. Happy 40th anniversary to Superman, the benchmark superhero classic directed by Richard Donner and starring Christopher Reeve in his star making role of the Man of Steel, with Margot Kidder and Oscar winners Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman rounding out the cast as reporter/love interest Lois Lane, Superman's biological Kryptonian father Jor-El and his arch enemy Lex Luthor respectively. Arriving at a time where the comic book boom was nonexistent and gritty, realistic movies dominated the 1970s until escapist fares like Star Wars, Richard Donner brought both dignity and awe to his adaptation of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster's creation through the revolutionary effects, John Williams' iconic score (his piece "Krypton" still sends chills down my spine), the stellar cast and wise casting choice of the then-unknown Reeve as Superman and his alter ego of mild mannered reporter Clark Kent. Reeve brought warmth, heroism and '50s era screwball humor to his flawless portrayal of both personas that we still hold dear and recognize as the definitive cinematic depiction of Superman (sorry Routh and Cavill). Superman is more than just mere kiddy fare, it was high spirited and majestic epic that was elevated by talent and treated the material with respect and broke the doors open for other comic book adaptations from Batman to Spider-Man and the MCU and gave us the talents of #superman1978 #richarddonner #dyronrises #superherofilms #dccomics #superman #supermanthemovie #easymissivegotyou #yougotmewhosgotyou #imheretofightfortruthandjusticeandtheamericanway #theycanbegreatpeoplekalel #theywishtobe #theyonlylackthelighttoshowtheway #fatherbecomestheson #sayjimthatsabadoutfit #thatsclarknice #ihavesentthemyou #MSTESCHMACHER !! #christopherreeve #margotkidder #genehackman #marlonbrando #jackiecooper #nedbeatty #valerieperrine #terrencestamp #1978movies #70smovies #warnerbros
How do you know when a superhero film simply works?  When the children in the audience leave the multiplex wanting to be the titular character.  That's how you know that a superhero film has done its job, and done it well.  That’s exactly the effect that Richard Donner’s 'Superman' had on me when I was a small child.  I wanted to be the Christopher Reeve version of Superman.  I ran around the house with a bath towel safety pinned to the back of my shirt collar and my arms outstretched in a flying position.  That film made the Man of Steel real to me. I was a child then, full of wonder and optimism.  It was the perfect age to receive such a film.  Now, as a cynical adult, it's easier to spot the cracks in Kal-El's cinematic armor.  The runtime is excessive.  There's a jarring tonal shift that happens once Superman finally reaches Metropolis. Last but certainly not least, Superman making the earth rotate in the opposite direction in order to turn back the hands of time is simply ridiculous. Those considerable flaws notwithstanding, 'Superman' still soars well above the clouds.  The late great Christopher Reeve simply IS 'Superman.' He completely buys into what he is selling the audience, and remains arguably the best such salesman to ever headline a superhero film.  Gene Hackman smartly plays Lex Luthor as a proverbial legend in his own mind.  Donner makes Superman's origin story and small town upbringing feel like matters of historical fact.  Never has an onscreen hero had better theme music than John Williams' iconic score.  When the title card sears itself onto the vastness of space during the opening credits, horns blare as though announcing the arrival of a God. The blueprint for the modern superhero blockbuster starts with this film.  It's as sturdy a foundation as any genre could hope for.  Now, we all believe a man can fly. #superman #supermanthemovie #supermanthemovie40th #supermanthemovie40thanniversary #40thanniversary #christopherreeve #richarddonner #margotkidder #genehackman #clarkkent #johnwilliams #kalel #dccomics #1978 #nedbeatty #marlonbrando
Forty years ago, audiences believed that a man could fly when Christoper Reeve first swooped into theaters as Superman. This week, we discuss the efficiency of a jail made out of hula hoops, an utterly pointless poem, and the trouble with “modern” phone booths. We also talk about the video games we played this year before finding out if 1978’s Superman stands the Test of Time. 40 years ago today, Richard Donner's 'Superman' (or sometimes 'Superman: The Movie') received its wide release. The film starred Christopher Reeve as Clark Kent/Superman, Margot Kidder as Lois Lane, Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor, Marlon Brando as Jor-El, as well as Ned Beatty, Jackie Cooper, Valerie Perrine, Marc McClure, and Terence Stamp. Sure, there are aspects of the movie that don't hold up all that well today, particularly the effects (but hey, it was the late 70s), and Supes flying backwards around the Earth to turn back time is a little ridiculous. But Reeve, Kidder, and Hackman are all totally awesome. As a kid, I DID believe a man can fly. 💪🏼 #courtshake #superman #supermanthemovie #superman1978 #christopherreeve #clarkkent #kalel #loislane #margotkidder #lexluthor #genehackman #jorel #marlonbrando #nedbeatty #jackiecooper #valerieperrine #marcmcclure #terencestamp #dccomics #dcuniverse #supermanmovie #supes #manofsteel #kryptonian #seinfeld #lastsonofkrypton #metropolis #dailyplanet #itsabirditsaplane #johnwilliams
ᏚᏌᏢᎬᏒᎷᎪℕ Happy #40thAnniversary #SupermanTheMovie40th •••••••• 📽 #Superman (informally titled #SupermanTheMovie in some listings and reference sources) is a 1978 superhero film directed by #RichardDonner starring #ChristopherReeve as Superman based on the #DCComics character of the same name. An international co-production between the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Panama and the United States, the film stars an ensemble cast featuring #MarlonBrando , #GeneHackman , Christopher Reeve, #JeffEast , #MargotKidder , #GlennFord , #PhyllisThaxter , #JackieCooper , #TrevorHoward , #MarcMcClure , #TerenceStamp , #ValeriePerrine , #NedBeatty , #JackOHalloran , #MariaSchell , and #SarahDouglas . It depicts Superman's origin, including his infancy as Kal-El of Krypton and his youthful years in the rural town of Smallville. Disguised as reporter #ClarkKent , he adopts a mild-mannered disposition in Metropolis and develops a romance with #LoisLane , while battling the villainous #LexLuthor . •••••••• According to #RottenTomatoes , 94% of 62 reviewers gave Superman a positive review, with an average rating of 8/10. The website's critical consensus reads, "Superman deftly blends humor and gravitas, taking advantage of the perfectly cast Reeve to craft a loving, nostalgic tribute to an American pop culture icon." •••••••• #RogerEbert gave a very positive review, awarding a full four stars and writing, "Superman is a pure delight, a wondrous combination of all the old-fashioned things we never really get tired of: adventure and romance, heroes and villains, earthshaking special effects and wit. Reeve is perfectly cast in the role. Any poor choice would have ruined the film." Ebert placed the film on his ten best list of 1978. He would later go on to place it on his "Great Movies" list. ———— #GeneSiskel gave the film three stars out of four, calling it "a delightful mess. Good performances. Slopppy editing. Cheap nonflying special effects. Funny dialog. In sum, 'Superman' is the kind of picture critics tear apart, but still say, 'You ought to see it.'"
#ArthurJensen : You have meddled with the primal forces of nature, Mr. Beale, and I won't have it! Is that clear? You think you've merely stopped a business deal. That is not the case! The Arabs have taken billions of dollars out of this country, and now they must put it back! It is ebb and flow, tidal gravity! It is ecological balance! You are an old man who thinks in terms of nations and peoples. There are no nations. There are no peoples. There are no Russians. There are no Arabs. There are no third worlds. There is no West. There is only one holistic system of systems, one vast and immane, interwoven, interacting, multivariate, multinational dominion of dollars. Petro-dollars, electro-dollars, multi-dollars, reichmarks, rins, rubles, pounds, and shekels. It is the international system of currency which determines the totality of life on this planet. That is the natural order of things today. That is the atomic and subatomic and galactic structure of things today! And YOU have meddled with the primal forces of nature, and YOU... WILL... ATONE! Am I getting through to you, Mr. Beale? You get up on your little twenty-one inch screen and howl about #America and #democracy . There is no America. There is no democracy. There is only IBM, and ITT, and AT&T, and DuPont, Dow, Union Carbide, and Exxon. Those are the nations of the world today. What do you think the Russians talk about in their councils of state, Karl Marx? They get out their linear programming charts, statistical decision theories, minimax solutions, and compute the price-cost probabilities of their transactions and investments, just like we do. We no longer live in a world of nations and ideologies, Mr. Beale. The world is a college of corporations, inexorably determined by the immutable bylaws of business. The world is a business, Mr. Beale. It has been since man crawled out of the slime. And our children will live, Mr. Beale, to see that... perfect world... in which there's no war or famine, oppression or brutality. One vast and ecumenical holding company, for whom all men will work to serve a common profit, in which all men will hold a share of stock. . . #theworldisabusiness #nedbeatty #network

Toy Story 3 is the best movie Pixar has ever made, nor will any film they make come close to taking the title away from this masterpiece of a movie! Toy Story 3’s plot has it all: laughs, thrills, action, some slight scares (yes, Big Baby and the Monkey are slightly terrifying!), and by the end lots of crying if you’ve grown up with these characters. The film is full of hilarious one liners as you watch your favourite gang of toys try to get back to Andy after accidentally ending up at the local daycare which is ruled over by an evil teddy bear. The film perfectly uses the time gap between the first two films to age Andy as viewers have aged to create an even more emotionally relevant story for those who were young when the original film came out. The voice cast is all back and absolutely incredible like the first two films, seriously is there any better voice performance than Tom Hanks as Woody!? But by that ending, it’s the perfect ending to the trilogy of Andy’s store and is a bitter sweet temporary farewell to these beloved characters. So whether you want to have a good laugh, relive childhood nostalgia or have a good cry, Toy Story 3 is the cinematic masterpiece that will do all of those and will forever remain one of my personal all time favourite films! 10/10 #ToyStory #ToyStory3 #Pixar #Disney #Woody #BuzzLightyear #TomHanks #TimAllen #JoanCusack #DonRickles #MichaelKeaton #JodiBenson #NedBeatty #WallaceShawn #EstelleHarris #JohnRatzenberger #LaurieMetcalf #TimothyDalton #KristenSchaal #JeffGarlin #BonnieHunt #WhoopiGoldberg #Jessie #Red #MrPotatoHead #MrsPotatoHead #AndysToys #Bullseye #Hamm
