So excited & honored to have my question answered live on @nasatv regarding how long the Parker Solar Probe is going to be in the most intense part of the Sun's corona. It was a thrill to have this question answered by Andrew Driesman, the Project Manager for @johnshopkinsapl and Nicky Fox, the Parker Solar Probe Project Scientist. I especially enjoyed Nicky's statement that we all are living in the atmosphere of the Sun!

The control circuit successfully activated my shutter as the engines ignited and fired off all the shots as the rocket ascended. "Atlas; This is Mission Control" - I don't know if they actually say that considering Atlas V is an uncrewed payload carrying delivery system BUT I certainly pretended to say it while sitting in @ulalaunch ASOC - Atlas V Spaceflight Operations Center. It's interesting to know that even though this is a rocket launch control room, there are no windows to physically view the rocket! They do however have a pretty badass video wall with HD cameras monitoring the rocket from multiple vantage points. Also, interesting to know, there are two sister facilities that @ulalaunch uses to control missions - one for each vehicle they FLY (Atlas & Delta). ASOC & DSOC - They also have one team for every facility including their launch facility located at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. Thank you @ulalaunch for allowing us #NASASocial participants to geek out in the coolest location! #nasa

. . . The first signs of life from the @ulalaunch Delta IV Heavy rocket is a giant plume of 🔥which is excess hydrogen gas igniting after being purged. To anyone not suspecting it, it's easy to panic and believe that something has gone terribly wrong. Launch of the #ParkerSolarProbe at 3:31 AM this morning at Cape Canaveral. The mission that began 60 years ago, will explore the surface of the sun. This is the fastest spacecraft ever made at 430,000 mph. #solarprobe #nasasocial #deltaivheavy http://parkersolarprobe.jhuapl.edu/
Looking out from Lake Ponce De Leon in Twin Lakes, Georgia, the #parkersolarprobe can be seen as it launches from #NASA on Cape Canaveral- 220 miles away- on Sunday, August 12th at 3:36 A.M. While it may not be very much to look at from so far away, think about what you are actually seeing in this photo.... From our own backyards, we are looking at the first moments of a 7 year journey that will take man's modern technology gradually closer & closer in an orbit toward the sun- further toward our nearest star than anyone or anything has ever been in the history of man! This solar probe, built by #UnitedLaunchAlliance , will capture data that will answer questions that have stumped scientists for many decades & help us better understand how the sun works! On the closest approach, It will be only 4 million miles above the surface of the sun....that may sound far, but to put that in perspective, if the Earth and sun were at opposite ends of a football field, (with the Earth being 93 million miles away from the Sun) the Parker Solar Probe would be on the four-yard line nearest the sun during the closest approach! Once the job is complete, it won’t have enough fuel to return home- it will gradually be burned by the sun until the probe turns to dust. The stars look blurry because of the movement of the Earth during this very long exposure- over two minutes long! Stars typically begin to trail in long exposure shots over 35 seconds- sometimes less, depending on the length of the lens used. The distance, combined with the rocket's trajectory over the Atlantic Ocean, appeared to make a rainbow-shaped trail over the horizon when viewed over the course of the #longexposure . @jaygblanton #Nasasocial #astrophotography #nightphotography #landscapephotography #historyinphotos #thegeorgiaphotographyfanatic @thegeorgiaphotographyfanatic
At 3:31am the Parker Solar Probe launched atop a ULA Delta IV Heavy from Launch Complex 37. It is on track to the Sun by way of Venus at a max speed of 430,000 mph, at that speed you would travel from Washington DC to Philadelphia in less than a second. This 303 second exposure shows the entire first stage including booster separation, which is visible at the end of the trail as a a small flash followed by the thin streak of the lonely center engine. #SolarProbe #nasa #nasasocial #rocketlaunch #rocket #ula #deltaivheavy #space #longexposure

The Parker Solar Probe rocket lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The probe is set to become the fastest-moving manmade object in history. Its data promises to crack longstanding mysteries about the Sun's behaviour. It is the first space craft to be named after a living person - solar physicist Eugene Parker, 91, who first described solar wind in 1958. "Wow, here we go! We're in for some learning over the next several years," he said as he watched the lift-off. The Delta-IV Heavy rocket - which was carrying the probe - launched at 03:31 local time (07:31 GMT). The probe aims to dip directly into our star's outer atmosphere, or corona. It is travelling on board the Delta-IV Heavy rocket, which will hurl the probe into the inner Solar System. The probe will zip past Venus in six weeks and make a first rendezvous with the Sun a further six weeks after that. Over the course of seven years, Parker will make 24 loops around our star to study the physics of the corona, the place where much of the important activity that affects the Earth seems to originate. The probe will dip inside this tenuous atmosphere, sampling conditions, and getting to just 6.16 million km (3.83 million miles) from the Sun's broiling "surface". "I realise that might not sound that close, but imagine the Sun and the Earth were a metre apart. Parker Solar Probe would be just 4cm away from the Sun," explained Dr Nicky Fox, the British-born project scientist who is affiliated to the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory. "We'll also be the fastest human-made object ever, travelling around the Sun at speeds of up to 690,000km/h (430,000mph) - New York to Tokyo in under a minute!" #nasa #nasasocial #science #sciencetech #nasatechnology #sun #star #orbit #orbital #parkerprobe #parkersolarprobe #parkersolarprobespacecraft
