Animal Collective is an experimental pop band that is characterized by their use of vocal harmonies, looping, and studio manipulation. They are a very prolific band, having released 11 studio albums, 9 EPs, 3 live albums, and 1 visual album since 2000.
During a European tour in 2004, the band was introduced to Vashti Bunyan, a folk artist that did some recording all the way back in the 1960s. Vashti fell off the musical grid for a long time, re-emerging in the early 2000s. The band immediately fell in love with Vashti’s music, and asked if she would sing on some tracks that were outtakes and demos from their album “Sung Tongs,” released the previous year.
The duo was a match made in heaven, and Bunyan was given free range to write her own lyrics and sing in any way that she wanted to over the band’s instrumental tracks. Bunyan said: “My daughter says she can hear me smiling on the title track, and I was. I loved having the freedom to sing as I wanted. I was still finding my voice after burying it for years.”
“Prospect Hummer” is a beautiful EP. It shares the same sonic experimentation found in “Sung Tongs,” but Vashti’s vocal presence adds a whole new aspect to Animal Collective’s signature sound. The title track off the EP may be one of the most beautiful songs the band has composed. The only critique is that there are only four songs on the EP.
Notable tracks: It’s You, Prospect Hummer, Baleen Sample, I Remeber Learning How to Dive
