On the first day of our Idaho deer hunt, @keith.knighton
was able to put a big buck on the ground! I spotted the buck feeding below us 130 yards away and told Keith to grab his rifle. Upon discovering a second nice 4-point, I grabbed my rifle in hopes to double down. After Keith hit his buck, the buck that I wanted to shoot was still standing in the same spot not knowing what happened. I quickly set up for the shot and right as I was squeezing the trigger, the buck started moving. Clean miss for me, clean kill for Keith.

Do you hunt/hike in the winter? What are your tips for the unique challenges? Have any specific cold weather brands you can’t live without? Share in the comments below! .
. 🚧Some of my tips are to follow ⛰To stay safe, it is vital to tell someone where you will be hunting/hiking and when you expect to return home. Time is critical in emergency situations, so be specific about your location and when you will return. Or, if possible, use the buddy system and take someone with you. This is a much safer option especially when weather conditions become dangerous. ⛰If you still plan on venturing out alone, at the very minimum, pack extra gear you may need in an emergency situation. Even taking along a lightweight backpack, with necessary items to help you survive the unexpected, is a no brainer for the experienced winter hunter. 🚧What I put in my Pack ⛰A cell phone (even in some of the most remote areas of the country you maybe able to pick up a signal and call for help)
⛰Several fire starting tools (such as waterproof matches, lighter and a magnesium stick).
Because you may not be able to find dry material to start a fire, tuck a few petroleum-soaked cotton balls into an old prescription bottle to use when you need to start a fire fast
⛰A Mylar emergency survival blanket takes up little room in your pack and could save your life
⛰A flashlight and a survival candle, which can generate a little extra warmth if you are in a snow cave or other shelter
⛰An extra hat and gloves (because outerwear may get wet—and wet equals cold)
⛰A few snacks and water purifying system ⛰Any medications you need
⛰Lightweight snowshoes (if there is the potential for heavy snows you can strap these on your pack) or heavy duty trash bag to put over boots to keep water out

Truly amazing endless waterfall. What do you think?
Sharing a memory of one year ago today when I saw this two-headed mule deer in Manitou Springs 😄. #muledeer #remembering

- HUNTERS (my rant): I get told a couple times a week from people “it’s crazy how fast the hunting industry is growing!” 🤦🏻♂️ This saddens me because that statement is not even close to being true. So many people just look at social media and think because the hunting portion of that is growing that the industry must be growing too! But that’s not correct, Hunting numbers are decreasing rapidly. In fact, the NET LOSS of the hunting population over the next decade will be 20% or more if we don’t change that. Everyone wants to be involved in the “cool thing” from a conservation standpoint (bha) but don’t realize that conservation is going to tumble if we don’t bring in new hunters and their license fees fast. Billions of dollars will be lost and money to fight for public lands won’t be there, and states will have to raise the license and tag fees significantly. There are programs out there called R3 programs and part of the foundation of my company Built2Hunt is based on connecting new people to Hunting and raising awareness through films, hunts and donations of this massive problem! Hunting, my company and the industry are my passion and to see people so uninformed about an issue that could cost us our hunting rights is heartbreaking. I will be producing new articles about our program and programs out there on the Built2Hunt website and we have a new hunter awareness elk hunt in December that we will be announcing soon. The more support we get or groups like ATA and The Sportsmen’s Alliance get, the greater our chances that hunting will be around tomorrow for your kids and grandchildren. I would love to hear your thoughts about this topic and more so send a message or comment if you feel. Thanks for reading@and
the support!! This article is from the January edition of outdoor life magazine showing the numbers and problems. #built2hunt #isitseptemberyet #bornandraisedoutdoors #fillthesleeves #elkhunting #deerhunting #huntervationist #conservation #savehunting #bowhunter #pursuethewild #elk #deer #muledeer
