- The First Family of Marvel... KIRBY STYLE!!!
The Fantatsic Four May very well be Kirby’s greatest contribution to Marvel Comics... and that is saying a lot. Sure, Cap is super important and so are all of the other Co-Creations that Jack, Stan and the Bullpen gang put out in those early years of Marvel... but the FF is the book that made it all happen, ushering in the new era of Superhero comics of the 1960s and allowing a path for all those other “creations” to have a home. That’s what makes The Fantastic Four Marvel’s “First Family”!!!
Jack certainly drew these four characters MANY TIMES during “The Run”, his epic 102 regular issue/6 giant size annual issue continuous streak on the book alongside Stan Lee... but I really love his evolution in artistic handling of the characters looks over the years. They all grew and their appearances changed over time, from those early versions from Jack to something similar that we see here in this commission from 1978. In this pic we see a group that has come a long way stylistically from the first incarnation Jack drew back in 1961. Especially the Thing, who went from looking a bit more round headed and lumpy to chiseled rock with his trademark brow!!!
This commission sketch was republished in #Issue49
of the Jack Kirby Collector by @twomorrowspubs
and was published in Fall of 2007. They always do a great job of reprinting rarely seen commissions and sketches from private collections, and upon my recent re-reading of this issue this particular one jumped out at me... so now you have it!!! Enjoy....
