’s review for First Man:
may not be my favorite movie of 2018, but it is the best made film of 2018 so far. On a technical level this film is astonishing. The way each shot is lit in cool colors gives this film an iconic look. The majority of this film was captured in 16, 35 and 65 mm, which gives it the grainy 60’s look, and it’s absolutely beautiful to see with the cool color aesthetic. However in the final mission it goes from film cameras to an IMAX camera(digital), and it is accompanied with exceptional sound design to make this a truly memorable scene. The majority of the performances were great, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Ryan Gosling (Neil Armstrong) and Claire Foy (Janet Armstrong) getting nominations for their performances. I’d also bet on Damien Chazelle getting another Oscar nomination for best director, and as of right now is my front runner to win it. However, for as much as First Man is an amazing feat in filmmaking, there was something that just didn’t click for me. Chazelle is one of, if not my favorite working director right now, and this is because of his last two films; La La Land and Whiplash, he wrote and directed them. For this film Josh Singer wrote the script, and I feel that this was the weakest part of the film. If Chazelle wrote the script instead of just directing, it would’ve had the same pizazz that his other films had. With stronger dialogue, I would’ve went from strongly liking First Man to loving it. I give First Man an 8.7/10. Do yourself a favor and watch this film on the big screen, many shots are breathtaking!
