I am 21 years old. Today would have been my graduation day. As all my former classmates receive their graduation degree, I cheer for them and congratulate them. I will not be getting a graduation degree. You see, I dropped out of college three years ago.
I never actually told anyone why I dropped out, I one day just disappeared. Some of my friends texted me and asked where I was, but some I never heard from again. This taught me something important :
"Some people are only your friend because you see them every day. These are not your real friends". Whole life we were told that we have to do good in high school to get into a good college. We have to get into a good college so that we can get a good job. We have to get a good job so we can buy a house and raise a family. The more time I spent at college, the more I began to hate it, and the more I hated it the worse I did. I stopped trying. My grades/attendance started to drop. I finally realized that there are more important things in life than college.
I dropped out because our education system didn’t work for me, just as it continues to not work for hundreds of thousands of students across the country.
I decided to learn online - Now I had my education in my hands. What I learned was entirely in my control.I started an online magazine, I began doing freelance work on various social media marketing. I was quickly gaining experience, and with it came more and more jobs.
As all my friends are graduating and moving on, I will not be following. Instead, I will be continuing to work as a Digital Marketer in a healthcare startup. I will continue to learn new skills, as I will never be done learning. To sum it all up, I will be continuing to do things I care about, things that I love to do.
Not everyone should drop out of colleges, but I would recommend taking a year off from college to try whatever field you are about to spend tens-of-thousands of dollars to get a degree in. And education is extremely important, but education and college are not the same things.
I am now 21 years old, and I am just at the start of what will be a great journey.
