In honor of #mentalhealthawareness #month
, I would love to formally introduce everyone to my fiance, @jeffmayodvm.
Jeff is my partner in crime with work and all other aspects of my life. We have been together for a few years (unofficially 2014, officially 2015. Shhhhh 🤫) Throughout our relationship, I slowly transitioned to working full time with him and was very hesitant of blending my personal and professional life; as was he. I came from working in emergency medicine and he has primarily worked in orthopedics for well over a decade.
We have an ambulatory practice that services the Seattle and LA area, we travel nationally and internationally spreading our knowledge in and out of the surgery room. We are thankful to be able do this as a team.
Working with your partner is challenging, but we get along 95% of the time and do our best to separate church and state.
Communication is huge and we check in with each other daily just to gauge each others mental states. Veterinary medicine is great and all, but we know how mentally exhausting it can be.
When one of us is feeling down, the other one is there to pick them up. We carry our load 50/50, but will shift our responsibility if one of us becomes overwhelmed, depressed, defeated or sick.
Our lives have changed for the better now that we've begun working together.
We can now see more patients in a day without overextending ourselves.
Our standard of care has gone up and we are always making adjustments to our care to continue to advocate patients.
It's nice to be able to come home to somebody who understands what your job entails, why you're crying and why you have poop in your pocket.
Sure, we make things personal in more ways than one. But, we are always striving for personal and professional growth.
Is working with your spouse ideal? Probably not for everyone.
But, for us; we trust each other in and out of the surgery room and that's one less thing that keeps us up at night.
