The list of names I’ve been called/ versions of my name’s spellings is really interesting, or so I’d like to think. I’ve seen memes about people’s names being misspelled (read: If I got a dollar for every time people spelled/ said my name wrong..), and I’ve had a good laugh at my many alternate names. However, it’s only recently that I’ve gradually learned I shouldn’t just let these errors be.
Initially I used to wonder (and even complain) about why people were so fussy about the way their names were pronounced or spelled. Despite being the recipient of a multitude of names, I realised only lately that it is not about the spelling and/or pronunciation as much as it is about basic respect of the individual and inclusivity. I have had people tell me that a “proper noun can be spelled anyhow”, but what about the individuality of the person in question? My name- spelled and said the way I say it- is a very important part of who I am and not acknowledging that counts as disrespect.
Many may think I’m overreacting, but just think of it. How insensitive do people have to be to misspell your name if and when it’s already out there (like in your email address and social media handle that the people in question are using to contact you) for them to see?! I used to let it go, but now I make sure I correct people when they get my name wrong. It will hopefully help them respect others (and me) and just be more sensitive and mindful.
