I wish I had learned the benefits of a daily meditation practice when I was younger. I imagine learning yoga as a child, navigating my clumsy form and accepting every moment exactly as it is. If only, as a kid, I’d known that you can never be bored when an infinite universe exists inside you. I wish I’d known to communicate from the heart, always. Instead, I’ve learned these tools a little later in life. And mindfulness is called a “practice” because I’ll never stop practicing for those moments when I need to bust out my toolkit. (And there are many!) .
Mindfulness 4 Youth is a San Diego based non-profit that believes a better world starts with the next generation. They bring yoga and mindfulness practices to school children. When we learn to navigate our inner worlds, we can better navigate our outer world. Being in the practice of embodiment is bringing me face to face with some deep wounds around self-worth. I used to allow myself to jump into distraction and busy-ness as soon as these uncomfortable feelings and emotions would arise, but, for awhile now, I’ve been committed to sitting with them, holding loving space for them, and doing my best to witness them move through me like a wave. And sometimes they do 🙏🏽 and I flow through each moment of my day with fearless pursuit, contentment and delicious encounters with the law of attraction. Other times, it’s a tsunami of emotion and dis-ease that keeps coming at me from all directions; quick to tears and a constant ache or heaviness in my belly. Still, I commit to being with it. What you resist, persists. The key is to remind yourself to stay with the uncomfortable sensation that is coupled to the emotion or thought that disturbed you. And you definitely won’t want to at first. It’s the feeling of wanting to crawl out of your own skin or exert a lot of energy, or it can be the feeling of paralysis or no-feeling - or disembodiment. These are the states where we act out or zone out. Yes it is hard to witness an uncomfortable emotional (and physical) reaction in your own mind and/or body, while striving to be still(ish) and mindfully breathe. It is only then that you can properly process, re-program and re-integrate limiting stories and beliefs in a healthy way. Our body works like a recording device in many ways. Constantly learning and adapting through current experience mixed with the complex history of our unique past experience and DNA. The only way - or perhaps the most efficient way - to rewire your system to support a life of calm, consciously connected, considerate, and compassionate communication (Alliteration is too hard to resist sometimes too) is to get embodied. The road of life is full of struggles for us all. Get into embodiment and allow (and even invite) the wave to surface and move to completion. The real jewel and sustainable satisfaction in life is waiting at the end of that wave. .
