Tending to your inner child // Growing up as an adoptee with no understanding of where I came from, who my biological family was, or how my story went pre-birth was incredibly challenging for me (click my stories to see the post talking more about this). It wasn’t until I became an adult that I fully understood the impact being abandoned and not knowing my full story had on me. Unpacking our own narratives takes a lot of patience, self-compassion, and work – it brings to light parts of ourselves we may have wanted distance from, parts we wanted to hide from, and parts we might have even felt ashamed of. • One of the beautiful parts of reckoning with my own story as an adult has been doing inner child work. As my own understanding of who I am has grown, I’ve been able to write to, dialogue with, and have compassion for the younger parts of me. Developing a relationship with our inner child sounds woo-woo and weird, but it is perhaps the most powerful healing work we can do as adults. • Inner child work might mean writing a letter to yourself at a tender or challenging age. It might mean recognizing the needs that didn’t get met, and finding ways to meet those needs now. It might mean working through the stories of your childhood and honoring the pain that was there. It might mean asking yourself what you wished you had heard, and saying it to yourself now. It might mean looking at photos of yourself as a child and imagining what it was like to be you back then. It might mean engaging in creativity, play, and intuitive movement to reconnect with your childlike self. Inner child work looks many different ways for all of us, but it can lead to profound connection with our relationship to ourselves. • What did you need as a child that you didn’t get? What experiences shaped you but didn’t get acknowledged? What memories stand out to you from your childhood, and how might you hold them with care now? What would you say to your childhood self if you could go back in time? What messages do you have for younger you? And, how might tending to your inner child shape your experiences of who you are right now – or of you are becoming? 🌟

It was over 10 years ago that I decided that I wanted to design a life where I lived and worked in Africa for half of the year. It began when I planted the seed through intention, when I said it out loud, when I began to prepare for a future that I was designing. It began with priming my mind with thoughts and feelings of living a purpose driven life. It began when I chose to let go of old stories of trauma. It began when I said yes to myself and harnessed my power. It began when I listened to the cadence of my heart. _ We often never get to the place of ‘it began.....’ because of self inflicted limitations that are usually worries that might happen in the future. From this limited mindset, we begin to search for permission to grow, permission to try new things, permission to change careers, permission to leave toxic relationships. It’s in these moments of choice. A choice to change our perspective, a choice in reprogramming our minds. Razor???? Hardly know her!! . Hahaha ohhhh boy I just KNOW I’m about to get some haters for this 😂 but here’s the story: I honestly never intended to grow my pit hair out. It literally just became a thing of laziness and I’m certain there are gals out there who know what I’m talking about! Like dang, shaving/waxing the hair on your body that’s “not supposed to be there” is a friggin hassle! But I never really thought about it as “bad” or “gross” until I had people giving me crap about it. They’d say things like “ew Maddy shave your armpits” or “put your arms down” or “that’s disgusting” I mean the list goes on! And at first I’m sitting there trying to think of all the reasons why I didn’t shave and the only one I could come up with was that I truly didn’t feel like it. But now after a few months, here are my honest, raw thoughts on the topic. Why the flip do we care about how others choose to express themselves? Do I really need to give you an explanation for why I do what I do? Are you seriously gonna give someone crap for doing something that you wouldn’t do? Like sorry I offended you for having hair on my body that’s SUPPOSED to be there? 😂 why can’t we just let others be??? . Tossing the razor has actually allowed to me to develop more confidence in myself. It’s forced me to be uncomfortable in some situations, but it’s also reminded me that what’s in my heart is most important. And while I’ve received more negativity than support for this decision, it’s been a humbling journey. . So at the end of the day, just be yourself because no one can take that away from you no matter how hard they try. Do what makes you feel confident and what helps you grow. Shave your pits, don’t shave your pits, who cares! Do your thing and be kind. That’s all. Happy Thursday peeps 🤠💃✨

• 🌿Clear to Cultivate 💐• _____ My aunt went home last week after 101 days in various medical facilities following an outpatient procedure gone terribly wrong. A relatively healthy, happy, successful woman with a zest for living suddenly found her life dramatically and drastically changed forever. There was and remains uncertainty, lack of clarity and feelings of loss and brokenness. _____ I've been deeply convicted. We could get into the why's and how's of individual circumstances, but no one is exempt from the fact that "life be life-ing." Where the rubber meets the road, however, is deciding how we deal with said circumstances. Do we actively participate in life, or do we relegate ourselves to being mere bystanders? 101 days... _____ On January 7, 2019, I'm taking the driver's seat and inviting all who will to join me. Life will continue to life. And that's ok. But where I have choice, I want to make it count. I am naming this commitment - "101 Days of Mindfulness :: Intentional Living for Elevated Consciousness, Mental / Emotional Clarity and Accomplishing Goals." ™ _____ To set the stage for this lofty, yet highly doable project, I am doing some prep work. This week, I am cleaning and clearing out everything that doesn't serve purpose in my life. I joke that I’m a legend @soulcycle because I’ve been around since studio and instructor training group 1. But thanks to my @linkedin profile anniversary reminder, it was 9 years ago today I started working behind the desk at W 72nd. Don’t tell anyone but I’m pretty sure I was riding during each of my shifts 😇. To be fair I was practicing for when I’d tell Julie Rice I wanted to be an instructor. Can anyone guess my audition song??? Spoiler Alert: it was the Black-Eyed Peas, “Pump it” 🤣😂Anyway. After my evening shift I’d lock up the studio at night, put on a headset, and teach to an empty room of bikes for hours. Since the first studio was so small you could hear everything that was happening in the room from the front desk. During my shifts while “working” the desk I studied what the real legends were teaching in the room. From the tone of their voice, anatomical cues, flow of music, to how they interacted with each rider. I was a top secret fly on the wall soaking up as much knowledge as I could. I knew after my first class I was meant to be on the podium. I knew I wanted to give people what I found in my first ride with Sue. A feeling of worthiness and belonging. It’s now been 9 years of riding bikes that go nowhere, but with some basic math the total distance adds up to about 3 rotations around the earth 😱. Who knew one beat drop and towel whip would lead to 100000 + rides with a bicoastal tribe of athletes for almost a decade? I mean whattt? Each ride has left me with more love for my body, community and life. Just sitting here thinkin about this crazy journey, how tired my legs are 🤪and how much gratitude I have for my riders for believing and trusting in me.
