Very busy and important 🤓 Selenium is a component of enzymes (selenoproteins!) that do a number of jobs in the body. These include protecting the cells from damage, assisting immune and thyroid function and being involved in reproduction. Found in soil, Selenium is present in many foods but at differing amounts. Brazil nuts and fish are typically considered good sources, but in the UK meat and cereals are the biggest contributors to our dietary intake. I had blood drawn yesterday for micronutrient testing! I cannot wait for the results. The testing is done through @spectracelllabs . The results should be in within 3 weeks. My nutritionist and I will use to results to help determine next steps specific to my diet! 🍎 She is wanting to focus macros! She actually told me yesterday that I should be drinking 2 of my vegan super food shakes per day after looking at the ingredients!!!! Can you say Christmas in September? 🎅🎄🎁 That was like freaking music to my ears 🎶. A lot of these accounts will lead you to believe that you can only eat chicken🍗 , broccoli🥦, sweet potato🍠 and avocado🥑 to be healthy (hence the availability of these emojis). ‘Gut instinct’, We have known instinctively for centuries what science is now proving – there is a close connection between our gut 🌮 and our brain 🧠 . A broken gut occurs when our microbes get out of balance. This can be driven by poor diet, lifestyle and medical reasons. So I often hear clients and members/people talk about what diet is right for them and how they should approach it. The key word for me is 'sustainibilty'. We all enjoy different foods so is it right for someone to tell you what specifically you should be consuming? My advice is no. Approach your diet in a way that has long term stability and include the foods you enjoy but within the calorie regions of what you're trying to achieve through your training. For instance if I was aiming to lose body fat, a recommended approach would be for me to enter a 'calorie deficit' but this doesn't mean cutting out meals and not eating, it means work out what my body needs in terms of macro and micronutrients and slowly reducing the calorie consumption of these foods, to promote a healthier style of weight loss. . . . Dinner last night! Vegan meatloaf, mashed sweet potatoes, and green beans and mushrooms! So yummy and healthy. The vegan meatloaf is mostly beans, oats, and a bit of corn meal. The secret was liquid smoke that added a lot of flavor. Honestly, I’m a meat loaf lover and have missed it since I decide to part ways with meat, but this definitely fills that void. 💯LEAN BULKING ISSUES💯 . I’ve been lean bulking for the past 6 weeks now and although I haven’t gained no more than 2lbs, I’m still making progress in the gym! 🏋🏽‍♂️ . When the scale isn’t going up or down, or you look a bit fluffier, don’t freak out at the idea that you’re doing something “wrong.” 🚫 . There are multiple reasons why you’re not gaining size or looking chubbier or the scale isn’t moving: . 1. Your not drinking enough water throughout the day. Your body needs to stay hydrated or it will essentially cling on to the water that’s in your body to prevent dehydration, which causes bloating and puffiness to your muscles instead of rock hard density.💦💪🏽 . 2. You’re not eating enough. This is imperative simply because you have to be in a Caloric Surplus (bulking) in order to gain muscle. There is no way around it. Albeit you can still make very good gains while in a Caloric Deficit (cutting) however, that tends to die down rather quickly unless you’re a new lifter. So, you have to eat enough food to support the hard training in the gym. 🥗 . 3. You’re eating too much protein. You see, when you’re in a deficit protein is important to sustain the muscle growth that you have just created. Also, necessary to help your protein synthesis and protein breakdown.🥩 . 3a. Eating too much protein while in a surplus isn’t recommended because of how filling protein is. Some of you have to eat, depending on your body weight, close to 3000 calories a day. So if you’re just eating 1-3 big meals a day, that will make squeezing in meals much harder unless you have a big appetite.🍽 . However, with lower protein your muscles aren’t going to shrivel up and fall off your body if you don’t get enough.😝 . BE INSPIRED 💫 Can I tell you a story? On 23rd January 2017 I met up with someone I had got to know through Instagram. Her account was full of beautiful food photography and we seemed to have lots in common. She was living not far from where I worked. We booked a lunch around my day of office meetings and got to meet face to face. . . She told me her story. How she’d quit her high powered job travelling the world to study to be a Nutritional Therapist. We laughed about counting air miles and climbing the greasy pole to a career goal that suddenly as we entered our 30s just wasn’t what we thought it would be. She had also recently found out she was pregnant, another big life changing shift in an exciting time. . . I came away from that meeting so inspired. By someone who had taken a leap, followed their passion, gone back to studying so she could give back and be the most informed she could be about food and it’s power. She had so many ambitions I shared for her blog and her future, sharing about nutrition and wellness and how to be the best version of yourself. . . Things had been changing for me too around that time. I had fallen out of love with my work and I knew I wanted to leave my job. But before that day I didn’t know if I had the courage. A week after that meeting I handed in my notice. If she could do it, so could I 👊🏼 . . That person is Caroline @nutritious.living. Today she’s facing a big challenge. But knowing her (even in a tiny way), I have no doubt she’ll face this in the same inspiring way she has tackled everything else in her life: with passion, determination, big dreams for the future and immense positivity that will affect everyone around her. . .
