Within my Narrative Project, I have been looking at human survival instincts and how we react when faced with a threat, and the instinctive fight or flight response that takes control of our movement. The narrative I have chosen to underpin my concept is the 2002 film, ‘8 Mile’, staring @eminem
. During the film, a fight breaks out between Rabbit (Eminem) and his mum’s partner, Greg Buehl, after Buehl finds out they are being evicted from their trailer park home. Witness to this was Rabbits 6 year old sister, Lily, who quickly takes shelter under the table, shielding her face and ears while the violence occurs. This scene and Lily’s response, has stimulated my curiosity to look closer at the instinctive, defensive structures of the human body in threatening situations.
Inspired by @sirantonygormley
, Sculptures, ‘ Iron Baby 1999 ‘ and ‘ Sleeping Place 1974 ‘, I began researching what purpose the Fetal Position has, as well as researching more into the Fight or Flight response. I began to experiment using my own body and putting myself in situations that bring out my innate instinctive reactions, using photography to document the results. In this case I let myself become vulnerable and exposed to the bitter Scottish January weather.
While toying with the idea of juvenescence , relating back to 6 year old Lily from ‘8 Mile’, I began digging through the attic, for all my childhood drawings which I proceeded to photo copy and use as props. I also found a mask I made as a child that I decided to wear. Here are three of many, weird, eerie photographs from the shoot.
