John Carpenter and Tobe Hooper - Body Bags (1993)
This isn't even near being top grade Carpenter but it is a lot of fun! It's particularly a lot of fun if you are into the horror genre, the simple act of spotting cameos here is amazing. You get Carpenter, Wes Craven, Tobe Hooper, Roger Corman and Sam Raimi in this film with small roles. The only director lacking to have the full horror pantheon would be Romero, which is a shame. Then you spot the actors here, and you get Stacy Keach, David Warner, Charles Napier, Tom Arnold and Mark Hamill, even musicians such as Sheena Easton and pop-cultural icons like Debbie Harry and Twiggy make appearances here.
This ludicrous cast alone makes the film worth watching. It's an anthology film, in three parts with Carpenter himself being a sort of Crypt Keeper, introducing each section, in a very Tales from the Crypt style of anthology. This means that each story is about half an hour long and if it isn't working that well another will come soon after. The first story is probably the weakest, and the second one the strongest. This story, "Hair", is really laugh out loud funny with Stacy Keach playing against type as an insecure man in a comedic role.
The first two sections are directed by Carpenter and the last by Tobe Hooper, there isn't much to say in terms of complexities of the film, this was clearly meant to be an entertaining TV movie rounding up a load of famous people for our entertainment. It works. It's silly, and ridiculous but it's not boring, so yeah. Good one. (3/5)
