Working out some cabin fever energy with Bella. Anytime the sun makes an appearance here you have to jump on that opportunity. Kids and husband went out ice fishing together so I couldn’t leave Bella alone inside. 😳 Bramley 20 mile race in Reading tomorrow 🙈 I really wanted to do this as marathon race pace to see where I’m at fitness wise for that sub 3 marathon @manchestermarathon But I’ve had a bad week 😞 I’ve been poorly since last Saturday evening and haven’t done a long run in 2 weeks. I’m still not 100% and scared how tomorrow will go 🥴 I’m going to see how I feel and if I’m not feeling it then treat it as a training run and drop the pace. *** I know that everyone has bad weeks whilst marathon training and I’ve always bounced back. So you should think I’d be ok right? 🙄 nope! 😂 I’m always worrying! I know in my head it’s fine to have a week off but there’s still that negative part of me that panics. Ahh well. Feel like I am making some really good progress to overcoming the injury and getting back to full training. I feel like I know exactly what I need to do to overcome the lower leg issues as far as stretching, mobility and strength 💪 are concerned - and now a technique session has flagged up I am probably leaning slightly too far forward, becoming a bit quad dominant rather than using the hamstrings and glutes to generate the speed. ~~ Picture 2 is an example which shows the result when I land. It has turned into a heal slight heal strike, a braking action, landing ahead of the body and increased force through the leg. Perhaps this has contributed to the injury over a period of time? ~~ Picture 3 shows my take off position with a bit of a forward lean. This is leading to using the hip flexors a little too much at take off and generally a inefficient action. The red line shows where I would like to be with a nice upright upper body position at take off - roughly where I was in August 2018 😁🏃‍♂️This allows the glutes and hamstrings to lead the action and “pull” me through. ~~ Picture 4 - great example of one of the elites from Amsterdam showing exactly what I am aspiring to 👍 ~~ It is so useful to do some video analysis and get some great expert feedback to identify even small areas for improvement 🎥 ~~ Then it was out for a Run with a 5K tempo section focussing on standing tall, staying nice and upright with the idea of the legs pulling me through. It felt great and interestingly took the pressure off my ankle almost entirely. You’ll have your moments to work hard. The other thing I was stupid about was stretching. Working out was always about strength and power. I hated stretching! I still hate stretching, but I’m trying to be better about it. Now I wish I could do the splits or reach past my toes or extend my leg way over my head. It helps with everything, and I can never get the quality of movement I’m looking for if I don’t greatly improve my flexibility. “If it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you.” 💫🏃‍♀️ . What a bonnie day for a long run! Spring is most definitely in the air. . All the peaceful feels this morning on day 62 #manchestermarathon training and 18.6 miles banked on my ‘old faithful’ LSR route...Woohoo! . Truth be told I was a bit nervous about this one. I’ve included blocks at marathon pace at the end of long runs before but this one was quite structured throughout as opposed to the easy pace miles that are usually the focus on these days. . ✔️ 30KM as: 6K Easy 8 x 2K@ 8:30- 1KM@ 9:10 . I convinced the brain by trying really hard to stay focussed on just being in the moment...thinking only of the rep I was on and celebrating the ones I’d banked already rather than thinking about how many I still had to go. . A bit late in posting last weeks RUNVAN FIRST HALF. As I continue to prepare for BMO Marathon, I used this race to work on maintaining a steady pace. Towards the end I really wanted to finish Sub 2, and I had so much energy left so I ran faster 😅. It was an experience running in temperature between -12 to -2. It was bound to happen: I biffed it on ice. In all honesty, I’m impressed I made it this long, especially with the winter we’ve had. My entire run crew got to witness my clumsiness. Ha! This morning we previewed the Tipp Hill Shamrock Run course, a famous (infamous?!) 4-mile race here in Syracuse. It’s typically held the weekend before the St. Patrick’s Day parade, and brings out huge crowds of the most fun-loving runners and non-runners who dress up and really get their Irish on. ☘️🇮🇪 🍻It’s also hilly as hell. I had 14 miles on tap today, so I set out early and got some lucky 7 miles in before meeting the crew, my nice fall (third photo was taken right before my spill 😂), and just as the snow was really coating the roads. It was a good tune up before next weekend’s half marathon. Coleman’s was gracious to open its doors for early morning pints🍺, but in true testament of adulthood I abstained. Who am I?! During a conversation with @kreeder26 yesterday (y’all, I am SO thankful for her 💚), I reflected on how much I’ve had to adjust my expectations as an aging runner. I started running at age 15 and I am currently 43; my body has a lot of miles on it. 😜 • In early 2013, after a challenging and humbling life experience, I set a goal to qualify for the Boston Marathon. I’m closer than I’d ever expected to be and, if my body allows, I’ll make an attempt at it later this year. It’s not easy work, but I love the challenge, and I want to keep going as long as I’m still having fun. . • No matter what happens, I am thankful for every day that I am able to go for a run and feel okay. I don’t feel great every day, lots of runs are mediocre, tolerable, but I can do it and I enjoy the privilege. I am thankful that I do not have physical limitations that prevent me from moving my body, being active, and I think of those who would love to have this ability. . • I hope you all get to do something you enjoy today, whatever that might be, and I’m thankful for you and this community of runners and readers!
