Mr J (continued from five posts back)
I have been sitting with his story wondering how many of us are like him. Loving, trying at whatever dreams we have, and quitting at first disappointment. I can imagine the day Maria showed at his doorstep. Her red hair slightly streaked with strands of gray.
He said she wept. That she wept so uncontrollably all he could do was hold her. He said he held her for what felt like eternity. Everything Mr.J describes sounds like a story out of a romance novel, or maybe I'm just suckered by love stories.
Maria had gone on to be a successful woman. She had done everything she had set her mind on. She even fell in love again but, ended things when the guy became too serious.
Mr J spoke of her as though she was present in that moment. I guess the heart has a way of keeping memories alive. Maria came back that day to find love again. She told Mr J how she had done everything; everything to be who she wanted to be, and yet none of that mattered anymore.
She had found that the cancer had returned and this time it was coming with a vengeance so, she willed all her possessions, and set to find Mr J one last time. He says though he loved her, that love had gotten bitter with time so when she showed up knowing he was single, he chose to remain just friends.
Seven months later, Maria passed away with Mr J by her side. He described the moment as watching your heart become idle. She passed away not knowing and not telling her is his greatest regret. So he never had kids, didn't think he could love again, and when love found him again, he chose a familiar song. A song that to this day, keeps him wide awake at night.
I wonder how many of us are like Mr J. Holding on to our clouds when we could see the other side of the sky.
