On October 6, 2018 I am participating in the Central Oregon Walk to Defeat ALS. I have my heart set on raising $500 this year because I’m trying to do everything I can to make my impact on this disease. I have a very personal reason to walk and raise money - I am walking in memory of my grandpa, Bob Anderson.
In the fall of 1999, my grandpa was diagnosed with ALS. I was in my first year of college at COCC. I had almost no idea what ALS was, and only a passing recollection of the history of Lou Gehrig. I started researching. I sent away for free books and pamphlets. I did a presentation on it in a speech class. And I spent a lot of time at my grandparents’ house. My grandpa passed on November 8, 2001 at the age of 72.
He lived an amazing life. He was in the Korean War and told me I could never be in the CIA because I had tattoos. He worked hard in lumber mills and as a saw filer, where he got to travel to Australia and Japan to teach them new techniques. He raised four amazing women and was the best grandpa a girl could ever ask for.
Each time I learn of someone who has a relative with this disease, I cry a little harder. In the almost-20 years since his diagnosis, the ALS Association has made amazing strides in care and research. But we still need more. That is why I am asking you, my community, to help me with this. Your money stays in Oregon and SW Washington and helps families and patients with ALS to get the care and services they so desperately need. I know you get asked to donate to a variety of causes--all of them needed and deserving. If you can give even $10, you will make a difference. I appreciate you all and I thank you for taking the time to read about my grandpa and the Central Oregon Walk to Defeat ALS.
Together, we can create a world without ALS.

When a team of All-Stars barnstormed Japan in 1934, the locals were excited to see the roster filled with the best of the big leagues. As expected, #LouGehrig
attracted the largest share of attention. The latter rode through Tokyo waving American and Japanese flags, then smashed 13 home runs in 18 games. One account attributes baseball’s growth in Japan to “the Babe Ruth effect.”
Lou Gehrig was already a 3-time World Series champ (and would win 3 more) by the time he traveled to Japan. Seeing such high-level baseball up close helped inspire the Japanese people to embrace the game in a big way. Today, baseball remains the most popular sport in Japan. Tonight I had another opportunity to go and give Pete Frates a haircut in his home, 6 years after being diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease ALS. I was able to sit down for a beer, watch football, and talk with his dad after about the “beautiful disaster” that struck his family... unlike cancer, ALS has limited victims, and not as much money is raised to help in finding a cure.. With Pete Frates “Ice Bucket Challenge” starting since 2014 ALS charities have raised close to A HALF BILLION DOLLARS!! ($500 mil.) ...
Since I had yet to donate and participate (4 years late) ... I’ve now bucketed and donated and give back the best way I know how #freshhaircuts #petefrates #lougehrig #strikeoutals
On this #ThrowBackThursday
we take a look at one of the greatest first basemen for the New York Yankees, Lou “The Iron Horse” Gehrig. Gehrig was an All-Star seven times, Most Valuable Player twice and had a grand total of 493 home runs. However, in 1939, The New York Yankees announced that Gehrig would be forced into retirement due to his diagnosis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or what is known as “Lou Gehrig’s disease”. In his final years, he became a New York City Parole Commissioner and with the help of his wife Eleanor, was able to perform his duties till a month before his death.
Lou Gehrig beat the odds. He was born into an under privileged family, but had natural talent and abilities that took him way farther than could have been projected. Due to his amazing tenacity and perseverance, his legacy is still spoken about to this day. Gehrig is a true symbol of what it is to embody #NoLimitsNoBorders

It’s deeper than a script for me. I wrote about my life, my experiences, my families lives. ALS can affect anyone for sure. Yeah 93% of ALS patients are Caucasian. But that other 7 percent was my grandmother, my aunts, my uncle. It’s bigger than the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. “4 Voices Unheard” official website Coming Soon 🙏🏽💙 “Sometimes God uses our deepest pain as the launching pad for our greatest calling”. 💯
J.D. Martinez is in the top two in Major League Baseball in batting average, home runs and runs batted in.
The last "true" Triple Crown was Mickey Mantle of the 1956 New York Yankees, who led all batters in both the American and National Leagues with a .353 batting average, 52 home runs and 130 RBIs.
Martinez could become only the sixth player since the American League began play in 1901 with an MLB Triple Crown, joining Mantle, Ted Williams (1942), Lou Gehrig ('34), Rogers Hornsby ('25), and Ty Cobb ('09). After Sunday night’s game against the Houston Astros, Martinez has a .331 average (trailing only Mookie Betts, who’s batting .342), 40 home runs (trailing only Khris Davis, who has 41 homers), and 121 RBIs (leading Khris Davis, who has 108). A batting Triple Crown in either league is rare. There have only been ten winners since RBIs became an official statistic in 1920, with both Rogers Hornsby (‘22 and ‘25) and Ted Williams (‘42 and ‘47) claiming the title twice.
The last two Triple Crown winners in either league was Miguel Cabrera for the 2012 Detroit Tigers and Carl Yastrzemski for the 1967 Red Sox. There hasn’t been an NL winner since Joe Medwick of the 1937 St. Louis Cardinals.
