Last night somewhere around about allenswater and flint, I was watching Home alone 1. It was around 10ish CT, I looked at the sky and saw how bright it looked for being in the middle of nowhere. No light pollution could explain it and The moon was on the other side of the sky too. My Northern Lights hunting radar went off. I looked At my fuzzy google-map to see how far north we were. I thought, far enough. I wished that I could check the aura strength online but I though, let’s just try it. So I put my camera on the long exposure and there it was! The beautiful bold northern lights. Shining bright green on my screen. That northern lights buzz excitement hit me right in the chest. Everyone was asleep around me so I paused home alone and ran as quietly as I could with my camera to the done cart. It was dark in there with only a man playing cards by himself. But I got a lot of blurry northern lights in the sky. Of course if we were moving, and I was in a dark area without lights from the train, and not taking a photo through glass I could have got a better one. But tbh, capturing any of the northern light - good or bad makes me giddy with excitement. Like I’ve managed to capture a world wonder and a moment of pure joy for myself.
Since I fell sick, being able to see these elusive lights has been a game for me. The odds, the probability. The being in the right place at the right time, with the right conditions - feels a bit like a metaphor for my life. The trick is to keep your eyes open, to really see. To see the different in texture and colour and light in the sky. To look up and around, and not down at your feet.
Chasing the northern lights where ever I go reminds me that I’m still alive & that there’s beauty & wonder & rareity in the darkest places and the harshest conditions that we can explore.
I’ll keep looking up, rather down at my feet. And I hope you’ll join me in that adventure.
