My family and I haven’t done an actual family trip in 19 years. For my dad’s 60th, and in celebration of my late Croatian grandfather, we decided visiting the land of origins was only right (and its Croatia, an easy choice to make). So now we’re making our way on a road trip through the Balkans seeing the sites and also trying to get a feel for local provisioning. This family loves to cook so the first thing we do is find the local open market. Sometimes we travel just to buy the local food and cook in our home away from home, which is kind of what we’ve been doing for the last week. Tomatoes, arugula, garlic, sea bass, octopus, mussels, and LOTS of olive oil.
Shopping in the local market is the way to get acquainted with the locals. Gruz Market is well away from the crowds and tourists of Old Town Dubrovnik. The amount of fresh, right off the vine veggies, fruits, and fish straight from the fishermen boats is impressive and mouth watering. The earlier you’re there, the better!
