We thank Geelong Permaculture Australia and the Blue Mountains Permaculture Institute for our Living Food Releaf for 90 affected families from our partner village of Balawag in Kalinga province after Super Typhoon Mangkhut swept through northern Luzon last week. We also thank the women volunteers of Balawag who helped us prepare for the relief distribution! Because the typhoon damaged crops and vegetables in the region, we sourced from local farmers and fishermen who produced dried fish, organic rice,and mungbean as offering to the economically affected families who have have large loss and damages, have single parents and large number of children. Each family was required to bring a container to receive 3 kilos of rice and 2 cups of munngbean and dried fish were wrapped in used paper sheets and calendars from the barangay hall. Living Food Releaf is part of our Garden to Garden Releaf response during relief and recovery stages to provide alternatives to processed food and plastic packaging based donations in evacuation centres, resettlements and affected areas. We aim to source the most available edible and medicinal food and plants from local organic producers and local economies while consciously packing them with alternatives to plastic packaging. With this design, we hope to activate a whole system understanding of the relationship of food, nutrition, medicine, waste management, and livelihood. Made this “fruit pasta salad” tonight for dinner. It was really good, really simple and hit the spot. I spiralized 4 Zucchini’s topped with a simple sauce comprising of 3 big green mangos, 4 big on the vine tomatoes, a bunch of fresh cilantro, and a handful of some fresh basil from my moms herb garden. Then topped it with about a half pound of okra and sliced up one large orange heirloom tomato. The sauce was good I just wish I had a little more basil to add to it. A very satisfying meal. Salad made of arugula with tomato, mango, red onion, tomato, fenugreek sprouts and sunflower microgreens with a mango-zucchini dressing. I sprinkled my salad with some sea salt and chiliflakes. I don't do well when I'm completely salt free and I especially like it on tomatoes. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Dressing is: half a peeled zucchini, a mango, garlic cloves and 3 tbs of hemp hearts. Put everything in the blender and blend untill smooth. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I can't stand for that long so I use a chair in my kitchen. But honestly eating raw makes things easier. It's just chop chop, then blend a dressing and there you have it. Also do not have that many dishes and no greasy pans to scrub. Your kitchen stays clean and your gas/ electric bill stays low. Well, all I do is put my bowl in the freezer for an half hour to an hour before I put my nicecream in it (you can even leave your empty bowl in the freezer overnight). This helps a lot but the second step is putting your bowl, this time with the nicecream in it back in the freezer for a while. I like mine like that. "At some point you're going to have to do the work" . A girlfriend of mine said this to me months ago, when I was still toeing the line of my healing journey. Back then it didn't necessarily resonate, but it stuck with me. There is no quick fix or one-and-done when it comes to health. There is, however, a very simple formula that once you understand, the rest is simply "doing the work". . Gradually as time passes, I see it less like work and more like self-discovery, chipping away at a lifetime of build up. My body is starting to eliminate quicker the further into it I get, which only motivates me further. . No, i'm not perfect and no, I haven't been able to commit to everything 100%, but with the passing of time, it becomes so much easier. Both emotionally and physically. Upgraded piece of toast: Dark cacao spread, tahini, cacao nibs, and granola. For the cacao spread (NOT a vegan version of Nutella! Way better, if you're into bitter dark chocolate and everything-toasted): In a pan, dry roast all the nuts and seeds you fancy (I got a bit excited and used sunflower, pumpkin, sesame, and flax). When it starts browning, add the same amount of cacao nibs (@wearerawliving ) and keep mixing until it smells like heaven. Roasting the cacao nibs will take some of the bitterness out and bring some kind of charred flavor to the spread. Transfer to a blender or processor and blitz away with a bit of water, a pinch of salt, and the liquid sweetener for your choice (good quality maple syrup for a round oaky flavor). Add more water if you want it runny, pumpkin spices if you're already in that mood, or replace the water with coconut cream for an even more indulging version. I might have used the leftovers in a coconut milk rice pudding that is definitely not instagram worthy.
