This Thanksgiving season, we are thankful for books! And libraries--including this cute little free library we pass on the way to my kids' school. Seeing it always makes me happy. 😊

We made colorful thankful books today at Kids Club at the Central Library! We wrote about the things in our lives that we're thankful for on repurposed brown paper bags and decorated each page with die cut Thanksgiving shapes and different art supplies. #LibraryLove #WestSlopeBestSlope #MakeCoolThingsandNewFriends #thanksgiving #thankful #thankfulbook

Five Days at Memorial, by Sheri Fink.
From Goodreads:After Katrina struck and the floodwaters rose, the power failed, and the heat climbed, exhausted caregivers chose to designate certain patients last for rescue. Months later, several health professionals faced criminal allegations that they deliberately injected numerous patients with drugs to hasten their deaths.
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••Apparently I was living under a rock when all of this came out. Horrifying doesn't even begin to cover it. The storm itself was devastating, but then all of the stories that came out after really hit home just how unprepared we are for life-threatening and life-altering disasters. And how a life-threatening situation can bring out a side of people that you'd never imagine.
This book tells the story of patients and staff at Memorial Hospital for the first five days after Katrina hit New Orleans. Then it goes into the aftermath of the decisions made by the medical staff and the overall mismanagement of the entire situation. Fink presents every side of the euthanasia debate and explores the differences between medical care in a normal setting vs life and death choices in a disaster.
Is there a difference in how we care for patients in various situations?
How important is informed consent?
When is it mercy and when is it murder?
What does "DNR" really mean?
How should patients be triaged in large-scale disasters?
How should limited resources be divvied up?
So many questions to think about. This book was one I couldn't put down. I also took pages and pages of notes to look back on...it was that good! I highly recommend it.
The kids have been sick and we haven't left the house in like a week 🙃 Luckily we always have about a thousand library books laying around just in case of emergency 😉📚💕
I found a perfect framing for the Northern Irish cliffs in the Mussenden Temple. Designed as a private library, it had to be a super cozy place to sit with a book on a gray November day and sip hot tea while watching this view...

Day 49: “It had never occurred to her that life could be different than what had already been set out for her.”.
. In 1955, eighteen-year-old Janet Jones keeps the love she shares with her best friend Marie a secret. It’s not easy being gay in Washington, DC, in the age of McCarthyism, but when she discovers a series of books about women falling in love with other women, it awakens something in Janet. As she juggles a romance she must keep hidden and a newfound ambition to write and publish her own story, she risks exposing herself—and Marie—to a danger all too real.
Sixty-two years later, Abby Zimet can’t stop thinking about her senior project and its subject—classic 1950s lesbian pulp fiction. Between the pages of her favorite book, the stresses of Abby’s own life are lost to the fictional hopes, desires and tragedies of the characters she’s reading about. She feels especially connected to one author, a woman who wrote under the pseudonym “Marian Love,” and becomes determined to track her down and discover her true identity.
In this novel told in dual narratives, New York Times bestselling author Robin Talley weaves together the lives of two young women connected across generations through the power of words. A stunning story of bravery, love, how far we’ve come and how much farther we have to go.
