Today in Horror History: October 17, 2003 The Texas Chainsaw Massacre(reboot) was released. It’s far from the best in the franchise and far from the worst. This movie is bathtub water average. It’s almost not worth posting about but I had the idea and when I researched horror movies released on this day, it was my only option. So yea, this movie is good. But it’s like when your girlfriend asks you how your day was and you’re like “eh it’s was good”. It’s an unenthusiastic good. If you haven’t caught on, I think this movie’s average.
We’d be remiss if we didn't drop in to leave a few thoughts on 2003's Texas Chainsaw Massacre. We both revisited this inaugural film from Platinum Dunes, a company birthed solely around the mission of protecting first time directors on their first feature-film experience. This turned (rather quickly) into a conveyor belt of, for the most part, commercially successful genre remakes that (likely) provided this current generation's first exposure to some of the biggest properties in horror. Remakes of Friday the 13th, The Hitcher, and finally Nightmare on Elm Street followed. By this point, the oversaturation of remakes were swallowing the genre —something that is still happening...with varying results. Sometimes we are thrilled about it...often, we’re not. However, drawing attention to the original source materials of ALL of these genre films is part and parcel of our mission: it is integral that we curate and save horror, guiding young monsters toward a full appreciation of what the genre has to offer. Fiends: This is, sadly, someone's Texas Chainsaw. This version of Leatherface, packaged to look so overtly menacing that audiences suffer an inability to connect with him (despite failed attempts to make him sympathetic), is someone's first experience with horror...and TCM. The highlight of this film? R. Lee Ermy, but when compared to the usage of comedy in the original it just feels amiss. Here we get the backwoods brutality and gore we didn't need in the original. That grittiness from the original is gone, too, despite using original cinematographer, Daniel Pearl. Overall, it's not awful...but unnecessary and lacking heart. When we're talking about source material that is universally considered a masterpiece, redundant is far more painful than “bad.” On the other hand, we're thrilled to celebrate the means to an end; because the commercial success of this film and the 13 other horror films Platinum Dunes produced eventually led to A Quiet Place, and the inception of newly announced PD offshoot (Fully Formed Entertainment) where Andrew Form and Brad Fuller have promised us: no more remakes. We look forward to what new terrors they'll bring to the screen.
