Michelle here...So appreciative to have had the opportunity to pitch my idea to a great TED panel last night. Regardless of what happens, it was enough just to try. That’s what I left with last night. This truly was about the journey, not about the end. . 2 years ago I would not have been able to even try. My brain wouldn’t have had enough space in it to contemplate something new. Instead it was full of pain cues from my psoriasis. . So today, I am grateful that I have space again - that I am no longer in pain, that the psoriasis hasn’t flared in 2 months, that I was able to do it by just healing my gut. . Cows are grass eating ruminants - not meant to eat anything else. When cows are fed grains - which they can’t digest properly (just like us humans in that respect) they will fart their butts off contributing to so called greenhouse gases & their resulting meat will also be inflammatory to the consumer. But if they are allowed to live in grass fields and treated humanely throughout their lives, that is a totally different story and more like nature intended... Humans are arguably meant to be omnivores (& perhaps even more carnivorous than we are told 😉) but again this is climate-related and it is obviously easier for someone to consume a more plant-based diet in an environment where fresh food is more available year round such as in the tropics. This of course is all about choice but globalisation has made our choices unrealistic regarding #realsustainability I believe we should all eat #seasonallyavailable #realfood & #locallygrownfood as much as possible . I’m on stage one of a gut healing regime. I’ve been told, many times over the years, that I most likely have a leaky gut and I have blithely ignored the advice. Or rather, I have kept to the protocol for a short while and then been waylaid by a slice of toast or a bar of chocolate. But enough is enough. I’ve put myself under the care of a functional medicine doctor and am going to do this properly. So, the first few weeks are all about cutting out gluten, dairy, added sugar and alcohol. I’m diving into my favourite cookbooks for inspiration and this is one of them. 🧡
Looks like I’ll be in the kitchen a lot more from now on. We have just found out, Our-eldest daughter is intolerant dairy, wheat, egg whites oh and peas 😅. So we have decided as a family to take it on at hme and support her as much as we can. I’ve not had meat or dairy in a long time but I never pushed that on the kids and they eat alot of my foods but never restrictions so it’s been a bit of a shocker for an 11 year old to be told no more pizza .... Leaky gut is a popular buzzword going around now a days - I have heard of many ideas as to what causes it: from stress to poor diet, but what is important to realize is that even with a perfect diet and no stress, your gut bacteria is the first step to good digestive health - when it’s out of whack - you are out of whack. It’s amazing how much clearer my skin is since I have eradicated SIBO and IBS-C. Last November I did an intense protocol to get rid of SIBO. When you have histamine intolerance, you can spend a lot of money on probiotics, only to find out that you react badly to them or to their fillers. Here is one that has all histamine lowering safe strains that I found for under $20 that works for me. I like to change up my probiotics with different strains each month. How to eat at Wegmans food bar with histamine intolerance: I started with a good base of their leafy green mix, then I added cucumbers, asparagus, a few pieces of three kinds of melon, blanched plain broccoli, 2 boiled eggs (I ate just the yolks), a few pieces of herb roasted potato (they were iffy for me as I tasted a hint of lemon and garlic - both triggers for me) and a few red beet pieces. I brought my own organic peaches and my dry roasted unsalted sunflower seeds to top my salad and I got ice water to drink. This morning I made some butternut squash soup. Yum! My recipe is 1 butternut squash, skinned, seeded and diced, 2 diced apples, 1-1/2 c frozen peaches, 1/4 c chopped frozen cranberries, 1/2 c carrots, 1 chopped celery stalk, 2/3 c lean ground turkey, 1 clove chopped garlic (I'm still on the fence with garlic, so next time I will leave it out as I felt a bit of head pain coming on), 1 T grassfed butter, drizzle olive oil. Seasoned with a sprinkle of organic turmeric, black pepper, ginger, celery seed. Sunflower seeds and ground flax for topping. Cook the ground turkey, celery and carrots in olive oil/butter mixture. Add other chopped ingredients to pot along with 4 cups purified water. Simmer for 20 to 30 minutes then puree. I’ve reintroduced some foods and paid attention to the reaction it gives me whether it’s on my skin or in my gut.
