This is my beautiful best friend who is telling her story and the stories of so many others with the same experience. I love her so much and she is such a gift. @spicybrownmami
This weekend we opened #thetimes2018
and it was emotional and moving to share this deeply complicated and nuanced workshop production. It is about this very moment we live in right now. We began writing and creating this just under 8 weeks ago and we need your help to spread the word. Tell people. We take care of you when you come into our new home in #boyleheights
• this piece is called poor like me and it deals with a very personal account of gentrification in an LA neighborhood. It shares one story of how we push people out, how we are all complicit in this behavior whether we know it or not. It discusses the complication that people being complicit in this practice, and it questions what it means to belong. Who is a threat, and how we can call the same block sketchy one day and vibrant and ethnic the next- if there is money to be made. “ We crammed 8 bodies into a place made for two.
Please, tell me again, how you are poor just like me. We sensed the wave coming, the lots that had been empty for years were filled with shiny new buildings and homes! They are building homes. The dry, tasteless and abrasive designs are a sharp contrast to the humble people and modest surroundings. “We are building homes,” yet they would rather let them sit empty then make room for me. At night, when the work is done I fly back home, I have made my home in a small dark, corner, hiding from the world. Maybe this time, I won’t be forced out, if they don’t know I am there. “ • #amplify #gentrification #lathtr #losangeles #changetheculture #devised #devisedtheatre #woc #latina #globalensemble #teatrolunawest #socialjustice
