And suddenly... it's winter! ❄️ ❄️ ❄️ As much as I like to embrace each season and be grateful for the unique beauty each brings, and as much as teaching at a nature preschool taught me to bundle up and #BeAnOutsider
no matter what... I must admit I was resisting the thought of this first snow coming.
I am striding in this #homerenovation
marathon alongside winter's advance, going full speed to get essentials done before the long cold season, but winter outran fall in the last week and I'm so close but just not quite there yet. So, I pretended that it wasn't really below freezing & wasn't going to snow... Thinking that ignoring it might just make it not true. (Note: this method does not work. 😉) Thinking that I just need a little bit more time to work and then can welcome winter with good spirit. I wasn't ready to embrace it.
Yet, I couldn't help but smile when I saw the snowflakes falling this morning. My "first snow" joy came back just as swiftly and surprisingly as the snow itself. I felt winter's magic, waking up to a blanket of white covering the frozen shore of the lake, and a perfect array of icicles hanging on the eaves. (They're so lovely, it's almost as if nature put them there for decorative effect.) Contrary to what I expected, I feel calm (and mostly warm - thank you new insulation! 🙌), and at peace, just like the calm that settles over the woods with fresh fallen snow. 🌲 Instead of seeing harshness, I see a new palate of colors ready to inspire. And I see plenty of time ahead to finish the rest of this marathon, step by step, nail by nail, plank by plank.
It's not the insta-worthy cozy winter cottage scene I imagine: curled up with wool socks and a good book under a big knit blanket on an @americanleather
sofa, looking out the big wooden windows (✔️ 🙏) at the winter-white scene complimenting the whitewashed floors below... (but these visions are #housegoals
that push me forward; it will be worth it in the end!) For now, I will welcome this first snow with joy and my own under-construction cozy: taking a break from projects, a hot cup of tea under my six blankets, and curled up designing my radiant heating system. 😊
