I have to say I’m not a big fan of King Kong movies. That’s why I had put this one off for so long but I wanted to watch something different plus my steelcase copy had been sitting there for a while. So I thought why not give it a chance and I was not disappointed.
A team of scientist explore an uncharted island in the Pacific, venturing into the domain of the mighty Kong, where they must fight to escape a primal Eden.
Now I have to admit, this was not one on my list, even with the star power it boasted. It was good to see Nick Fury with Captain Marvel and Loki, it gave a good indicator for the Captain Marvel film to come but enough about that. This film is pretty straight forward, venture to an unknown place, raise hell, leave. It’s King Kong, we have come to expect that but what this film does well is how it shows its location and uses it. For me the film does not kick off till John C. Reilly comes in, he stole the show and made it funny and interesting.
Kong: Skull Island is one of those action films where you can show off the effects and amazing surround sound audio though it does win the location department. I did not care so much for the characters and I kept getting a predator vibe from the film. It might have been because of the jungle and the whole mercenaries vs Kong. All in all, it’s nothing amazing but it does bring a few new things to the table and changes up the formula a little. It’s 3 out of 5 stars. I will probably watch it again before the slated Kong/Godzilla film comes out.
