Itโ€™s Mental Health Week! Our childrenโ€™s mental well-being matters. Mental health is how we think, feel and act. It affects how a child feels about himself/herself, relates to other people and handles stress, change and other life situations. As many as 1 in 7 children aged 4-17 in Australia experience a mental health disorder. We have fabulous services here in Australia such as @headspace_aus @kidshelplineau @reachout_aus and @youthfocuswa There is also help at school and in the community privately with assistance through a GP for a mental health care plan. However only 17% of children who need the services access them. ๐Ÿ—ฃSo letโ€™s talk about it. Letโ€™s get our kids the help they need, when they need it. YOGHURTS . . ๐Ÿ™„The BBC article on sugars in yoghurts yesterday was such a misleading article! . . ๐Ÿฅ› Yoghurt has 5-6g lactose per 100ml which should NOT be counted in the โ€˜sugarsโ€™. The labelling of dairy products is very confusing for this reason! . . ๐Ÿ“ I always suggest that parents check the ingredients list for added sugars. Ingredients are always listed in descending order, so if sugar or glucose syrup etc is in the first 2 ingredients itโ€™s very high! . . ๐Ÿค” Letโ€™s not forget that yoghurt is a really good source of calcium, protein, iodine and some have live cultures so good for gut health too. This my husband Ryan and our puppy Dustin. Believe it or not but until the start of this year, we were no-way, not-ever going to get a dog. ๐Ÿ• You see Ryan is allergic. ๐Ÿถ Despite years of nagging from our children (and subtle hints from me) the answer way always no. ๐Ÿ˜ž Then we 'borrowed' a friends labradoodle and Ryan was absolutely fine - well that was a revelation! ๐Ÿ• This kicked of the search for the perfect puppy - Ryan and I would go visit a litter, Ryan would cuddle and play with the Mummy dog and we would wait and see what happened. ๐Ÿคž In October 2017 we drove 50 miles to Ashford to meet Kippy and her litter of 10 puppies....and we had success! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿถ Dustin was announced to the children at Christmas. when they unwrapped a dog bowl and collar looking mystified and he came to live with us on my birthday in January! ๐ŸŽ„ #behindthescenes #parenting #childrensnutrition #dietitian #nutritionist #kidsdietitian #childrensdietitian #kidsnutrition

โญ๏ธ FINGER FOODS โญ๏ธ . . ๐Ÿฅ„ Whether you are doing traditional weaning with purรฉed foods or baby led weaning, soft finger foods should be introduced from 6 months. . . ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป Finger foods help babies to develop chewing and biting skills as well as developing their motor skills and coordination. . . ๐Ÿ‘†๐ŸปFirst finger foods should be around the same shape and size as an adult little finger. . . . ๐Ÿฅฆ Large pieces work best at first while your baby is still learning to pick up foods. The food should stick out of the top of your babyโ€™s fist. Pincer grip only develops at around 9-10 months so avoid small pieces of food at first. . . . Some ideas of soft finger foods to try from 6 months: ๐ŸฅฆCooked broccoli, Cooked cauliflower ๐Ÿฅ•Cooked carrots (cut lengthways), Cooked green beans or asparagus ๐Ÿ Sweet potato, roasted ๐Ÿ‘Ripe peach ๐ŸฅRipe kiwi Ripe mango ๐ŸˆRipe melon ๐Ÿฅ‘Avocado Bananas ๐ŸŒ *Salmon fish cakes ๐ŸŸ *Meatballs *Eggy bread ๐Ÿž *Omelette (cut into strips) ๐Ÿณ *Mini bean or lentil burgers *Slow cooked beef or lamb ๐Ÿฅฉ *Nut butter spread on toast *iron-rich ideas marked with a โ€˜*โ€™ . . . โญ๏ธTOP TIPโญ๏ธ Leave a little skin on the fruit and veggie finger foods (rinse and scrub fruit/veg first) so that your baby can grip them better ๐Ÿคœ๐Ÿป . . Thank you for having me! ๐Ÿ˜€ . . โ“Some great questions today, particularly about food #allergies and when to introduce the most common food allergens. . . ๐Ÿค“ The advice is to introduce the allergenic foods (cows milk ๐Ÿฅ› egg ๐Ÿณ peanut ๐Ÿฅœ tree nuts, wheat, soya, sesame and fish ๐ŸŸ) from 6 months of age, one at a time. . . ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿผ If your baby has early onset eczema and/or an existing food allergy, they are considered at โ€˜higher riskโ€™ of developing food allergies. ๐Ÿฅฆ GREEN STUFF FIRST ๐Ÿฅฆ . . ๐Ÿ’š The latest research has shown that offering veggies (especially โ€˜greensโ€™) โ€œfirst, frequently and in varietyโ€ is the way to go when introducing solids to your baby . . ๐Ÿ’š Babies are born with an innate liking for sweet tastes and their taste buds need to be trained to like bitter, sour and savoury tastes . . ๐Ÿ’š Start by offering green vegetable purรฉes with some of your babyโ€™s usual milk. Good options include green beans, spinach, broccoli, kale . . ๐Ÿ’š Offer cooked green vegetables as finger foods as well . . ๐Ÿ’š Next start offering other less bitter veggies as purรฉes or finger foods ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿฅ”๐Ÿฅ•๐Ÿฅ‘ . . ๐Ÿ’š Once these are accepted try sweeter veggies and then a variety of fruits ๐Ÿ‰๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿฅ . . ๐Ÿ’š Remember to also start offering iron-rich foods alongside these veggies when your baby is over 6 months old as iron stores start to run out from around 6-7 months of age . . ๐Ÿ’š Want to know more about #weaningyourbaby ? And look out for some exciting news from me at the end of this post too... . . ๐Ÿฅ‘ WHAT? Baby led introduction to solids study (BLISS) published in BMJ in May 2018 based on a population in New Zealand looking at a modified form of baby led weaning and the iron status of babies ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿผ . . ๐Ÿฅ‘ FINDINGS The study found that there was no difference between groups in both iron intakes at 7 and 12 months; and iron status (Hb and ferritin) of the babies at 12 months. BUT Both groups had low dietary iron intakes (from complementary foods) at 7 months of age of 1.0mg and 1.2mg/day . . ๐Ÿฅ‘ GROUPS BLISS group included advice to offer high iron and energy dense foods at every meal vs. Traditional spoon ๐Ÿฅ„ feeding group (control group) received usual midwifery and โ€˜well babyโ€™ care. . . ๐Ÿ˜† MY EXCITING NEWS... Sunshine and rainbows on a plate....so many different colours and one of my fave kinda meals of leftovers (cook once eat twice!) thrown together; we have sweet chilli prawns with noodles, homemade spinach and cheese crustless quiche, grilled Halloumi, new potatoes and a tiny bit of pasta plus lots of veggies. This is my 4 year olds plate (sheโ€™s almost 5) and itโ€™s not as much as it looks. My 2 year old had the same but a smaller portion. ๐Ÿฅฃ A DAY FOR SOUP ๐Ÿฅฃ . . โ„๏ธ As it was so freezing today, I decided it was a day for soup! . . ๐Ÿฅฃ This is one of my favourite soups...sweet potato ๐Ÿ  and ginger with a hint of chilli ๐ŸŒถ . . ๐Ÿฅฃ This soup was a hit with the whole family! I served it with #sourdough bread ๐Ÿ˜‹ . . ๐Ÿฅฃ The key to this very easy recipe is to roast the sweet potatoes first . . ๐Ÿฅฃ RECIPE ๐Ÿ  Peel and cube 4-6 sweet potatoes and roast at 190 degrees for 35 mins ๐Ÿ  Fry 2 onions in a little oil (I use rapeseed or olive oil) ๐Ÿ  Add 1 tsp each mince garlic and ginger ๐Ÿ  Fry gently until onions softened ๐Ÿ  Add 1/2 tsp crushed chillies for some extra heat (optional). ๐Ÿ  Add roasted sweet potatoes and 1.2 litres stock or water ๐Ÿ  Then use a hand blender to make into a smooth soup. ๐Ÿ  Serve with sourdough bread ๐Ÿ˜‹ . . #lovesoup #sweetpotatoes #ginger #chilli #kidsnutrition #familynutrition #dietitianmum #kidsdietitian #tinytotsnutrition ๐ŸŽ

We meet heaps of kids who simply love pasta ๐Ÿ (and just as many parents concerned that their kids eat too much pasta!). There are many different types to now choose from including traditional wheat based, as well as rice, corn, lentil and this #pulsepasta . One key nutritional difference can be the fibre content. Pulse pasta has ~3x as much fibre as regular wheat pasta.
