We posted a savoury Christmas tree sandwich yesterday and today our Christmas tree has gone all fruity with these pancakes topped with kiwi and then strawberries and blueberries for the baubles and a banana slice for the star but pineapple would work just as well. . The drizzle is just plain whole yogurt. If you can make it look like tinsel even better!

LENTILS. . A convenient, inexpensive alternative to animal protein. They are a great way to introduce your baby to protein and provide many nutrients such as fibre, iron and folate. . Here’s my recipe: . Serves roughly family of 8 (so double for family of 4) . Ingredients: 240g red lentils Half onion, chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2 canned tomatoes 200ml stock (use baby stock for babies and low salt stock otherwise) or make your own but don’t add salt Dried herbs . Instructions: 1) fry the onion and garlic until brown 2) Add the lentils, canned tomatoes, stock and herbs and simmer for about 15 minutes until the lentils are soft. . This can be whizzed up for a yummy soup or blended to the desired consistency for babies. . See my short blog (link in bio) for other serving suggestions for all the family. . Tonight we are going to have these (leftover from Sunday) on jacket potatoes with cheese and extra veggies on the side for a quick meal as Tuesday is our swimming lesson night and we are back late! . You could add in other veggies like carrot and red peppers too for even more taste and goodness. . Let me know if you try them. . . . . #teenyweaning #familyfood #healthyfood #healthyrecipes #weaning

#reposticonosquare #repost ・・・ MYTH #3 for #WisdomWednesday from the super talented Paula Hallam of @tinytotsnutrition “Certain foods should only be eaten at certain times of the day” ⏰ For example: Breakfast cereal 🥣 or toast 🍞 or eggs 🍳 or pancakes 🥞 should only be eaten at breakfast time... ❌ FALSE! Food is just food... it is not breakfast food or lunch food or dinner food or “junk” food 🍔 . 🥑 Of course, some foods are more nutritious than others BUT it is not helpful to label foods as “good” or “bad” foods or “breakfast foods” as this does not teach children how to eat or help children to develop a healthy relationship with food 🥘 🍝 If your child wants to eat pasta, chicken and peas at breakfast time, THAT’S OKAY! 😀My youngest daughter often has a pasta or rice dish or leftovers for breakfast and I’m ok with that 👍🏻😊 🍟 So called “junk” foods can play a helpful role as stepping stones to teach children with feeding difficulties to accept a wider range of foods. This is because these “junk” foods typically have an easy texture to manage and can have a big sensory appeal by being very spicy 🌶 or crunchy 🆘 If you think your child may have a feeding difficulty or you are worried about your child’s #fussyeating get in touch with Paula. PEANUTS IN WEANING . Peanut butter is a great way to introduce peanut to weaning babies but you can also try ground peanuts or peanut puff snacks. . NB whole nuts are not suitable until 5 years due to choking risk. . Peanuts can be introduced from 6 months. And current advice is to give peanuts between 6-12 months as delaying them any further may increase the risk of allergy to them. Also keep offering peanuts to continue your baby’s tolerance. . If your baby is at higher-risk of peanut allergy due to early onset eczema (in first 3 months) or already has an allergy guidelines say they may benefit from early introduction of solids and also peanut, however for those with severe eczema or if you are concerned get a skin prick test first before introducing. How to introduce peanuts: a thin spread of peanut butter on toast or a cracker or breadstick or stir it into porridge or fruit purée or give as finely ground nut. Thin down peanut butter with warm water before using to begin with as it’s texture is quite thick. I discuss how and when to introduce allergenic foods in detail at my weaning workshops. Date of next weaning workshop (accept private ones) is 11th January 2019, 1-3pm, Beckenham. Get in touch if you can make this or if you’d like to book a private one.

MUMMY AND ME MEALS Lots of different toast toppings using up leftovers today. Love toast as so many healthy toppings can be added. My 2 year old’s fave is good old cheese on toast so she has 2 slices of this and she’s not so keen on tomato or avocado at the moment - so she has just a little of these. Other 2 toast pieces have Tzatziki with cherry tomatoes chopped and chicken with avocado. Mummy and Me Meals are meals eaten together with more or less the same thing. Little ones learn by copying and are likely to eat much better when they eat together with others. NB don’t rely too heavily on toast for babies as the shop bought stuff does contain salt. . . . #teenyweaning #mummyandmemeals #weaning #weaningbaby #dietitian #dietician #nutritionist #babynutrition #childnutrition #kidsnutrition #kidsdietitian

Today we are continuing on with our reposts from the hugely knowledgeable Paula Hallam of @TinyTotsNutrition #repost MYTH #2 “Eating is easy!” #fussyfriday ❌ FALSE! Eating is actually a very complex task involving all of our senses and many organ systems of the body. 😊 For a child to eat well, they must have the following: - Proper posture when sitting - Appropriate coordination between breathing and eating - Good large and fine motor skills - Good strength in the muscles around the mouth, cheeks and tongue 😛 - A well functioning digestive system 🍽 For most of us eating IS easy a 2️⃣ step process... you sit at the table and you eat! However, for many children who have sensory or other difficulties with eating, there are actually 3️⃣2️⃣ steps to eating according to the #sosapproach to feeding . ❓What can parents do to help? The best thing you can do for your baby 👶🏼 or child 🧒🏼 is to let the get MESSY! Let them experience food with ALL their senses and provide a happy and relaxed 😊 atmosphere at mealtimes. Embrace the MESS 😝 . #fussyfridays #fussyeaters #sosapproachtofeeding #childrensdietitian #kidsnutrition #kidsdietitian #sensoryprocessingdisorder #sosfeedingtherapy #pickyeaters #kidsfood #babyledweaning #embracethemess
MYTH #7 . . “If a child won’t eat, they have EITHER a behavioural OR an organic problem” . . ❌ FALSE! Research from various studies including work from the @starinstitute in Colorado US, shows that 65-95% of all children with feeding problems have a COMBINATION of behavioural AND organic problems. . . 👦🏻 If a child starts with a physical problem with eating, such as reflux, then they are quickly going to learn that eating doesn’t work or hurts and a set of behaviours to avoid eating will start to happen. . . 🧒🏼 If a child starts with purely a behavioural/environmental reason for not eating, their lack of experience with that skill will quickly begin to cause organic problems. For example, if a child gags on lumps, then the parent may stop offering food with lumps (understandably) and therefore the baby does not develop chewing skills. . . 🏷 It is therefore not very helpful to “label” a child as having EITHER a behavioural OR an organic problem with eating. It’s most likely to be a combination of the two. The important point is to help the child to enjoy a variety of foods of all different tastes and textures, regardless of how their problem with eating started! 🍎🥭🥝🥬🌶🌽🥕🥐🧀🍖 . . 😊 This will be the last in my series for #fussyfriday talking about #mealtimemyths I hope you’ve enjoyed them! . . 💡 Any ideas what you’d like to hear about next?? ❓How can I offer lentils as a finger food? #Mumday #weaningquestions . . 🤩Today I lead a weaning workshop for a group of lovely mums @busylizzyrichmondtwickenham . . ❓We had some great discussions with brilliant questions from the group. This was one of the questions to come up...how can lentils be given as a finger food to your baby? . . 👶🏼 Lentils are a great food to offer to your baby - they are a fantastic source of protein, iron and fibre. Remember to offer a source of vitamin C to improve the absorption of the iron, such as tomatoes 🍅 broccoli 🥦 peppers 🌶 potatoes 🥔 . . 🤩 Back to the question! To serve lentils as a finger food for babies, you can make ‘mini lentil burgers’ or ‘lentil fingers’ by cooking the lentils until soft, add some mashed potatoes 🥔 and an egg 🍳 to bind the mixture. You can also add herbs 🌿 garlic or spices to add flavour. Shape the mixture into ‘balls’ or ‘fingers’ for your baby to pick up 😊 . . BEEF AND CHICKPEA CASSEROLE. . Happy Sunday! As promised in my stories this week here is the recipe. . Serves 8 . Ingredients: 2 small onions, peeled and sliced Olive or rapeseed oil 500g beef or lamb diced into small pieces 2 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed 1 red pepper Mushrooms, sliced (300g) 2 teaspoon tomato purée 2 canned chopped tomatoes (800g) 2 cans chickpeas (800g) 400ml water 4 sprigs of fresh basil (swap for a sprinkle of dried herbs if not available) . Method: Heat large casserole dish and fry onion in little oil for 10mins. Add diced beef or lamb, garlic, red pepper, mushrooms and tomato purée and fry until meat brown. Stir in canned tomatoes, chickpeas, water and herbs. Cover with lid or couple tight layers of tinned foil and then transfer to oven at 150oC for about 2 hours, or until meat is tender. . Serve with brown rice or couscous and a side of veg. We have cauliflower here. . This is a great source of iron from the red meat and chickpeas with vitamin C from the tomatoes to help with iron absorption. In a bid to reduce red meat consumption I have halved the meat and replaced with chickpeas. You could use any other beans or peas or lentils instead of the chickpeas too and all beans, peas and lentils provide some iron. Iron is one of the critical nutrients i talk about in my #weaning workshops as iron deficiency can lead to delays in cognitive development and a baby’s stores of iron run out by 6 months. . For young babies this recipe can be blended down or cut into really small pieces once bigger pieces can be managed. It has no added salt. . Let me know if you try it. . If you happen to have the ingredients you could try it for Sunday lunch! . MYTH #6 🧒🏼 “Children only need to eat 3 times per day” . . ❌ FALSE! Young children have small tummies (and attention spans 😜) so they need 5-6 ‘eating opportunities’ or ‘mini meals’ per day to meet their nutritional requirements for growth and development. . . 🥑 Try to use each ‘mini meal’ as an opportunity to provide more nutrients to your child especially if you think they’ve missed out on something at the previous meal/snack . . Offer at each MINI MEAL: * A starchy carbohydrate (some WG) 🍞 🍚 🍝 🍠🥔🥞 * 1-2 fruit or veggies 🌽🥝🍎🥕🥬🥦🍆🍒🍌🍇🍉🥗 * A high protein option* (dairy or meat/beans, lentils, pulses) 🥛🧀 🥩🍗🍤🍣 🍖🐟🐠🥫 . . *high protein options - through the day offer: 🥛3 dairy/calcium rich foods 🥩2 iron rich foods OR 🌱3 vegetarian iron rich foods . . 😊 The British Nutrition Foundation has a fantastic ‘5532’ resource on toddler portion sizes (see link below) 👇🏻 https://www.nutrition.org.uk/attachments/article/734/BNF%20Toddler%20Eatwell%20Leaflet_OL.pdf . . #childrensdietitian #kidsdietitian #kidsnutrition #fussyfriday #dietitianmum #mealtimemyths #toddlernutrition
🌱 What are good vegetarian sources of iron? #Mumday . . ❓DID YOU KNOW? ⭐️ Iron deficiency is the most common nutrient deficiency in the world 🌍 with 1 in 8 children in the UK between the ages of 18-28 months reported as having iron deficiency anaemia (low haemoglobin) whilst many more could be iron deficient (low ferritin - the iron storage marker) . ⭐️ Symptoms of IDA include looking v pale, feeling tired all the time 😴 irritable behaviour and suffering a lot of infections 🤒 IDA can also slow down your child’s development. . . ❓WHY is iron such an important nutrient? 1️⃣ Iron is very important for a child’s cognitive and motor development 2️⃣ Iron plays a very important role in the immune system 3️⃣ Iron is particularly important for making haemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that transports oxygen around the body . . 🤔 HOW MUCH do babies and toddlers need? . ⭐️ During the first few years of life, children need more iron per kg body weight than at any other time in their life. . ⭐️ Babies requirements increase from 7 months of age due to iron stores that they are born with, running out ⭐️ We know that children who are vegetarian/vegan need more iron than meat eaters, due to veg sources of iron being relatively poorly absorbed . . . ❓WHAT are good vegetarian sources of iron? ✔️ eggs 🍳 ✔️ lentils , beans and pulses ✔️ hummus ✔️ Nut butters and ground nuts 🥜 ✔️ fortified breakfast cereals 🥣 ✔️ Dried fruits particularly dried apricots, figs and raisins 🍇 ✔️ Green leafy veggies 🥦 . . . ❓What can HELP absorption? - Vitamin C can increase iron absorption 2-3 times 😮 - Vitamin C rich foods include berries 🍓kiwi 🥝 tomatoes 🍅 peppers 🌶 potatoes 🥔 broccoli 🥦 citrus fruits 🍊 - Fermentation can help break down phytates in WG breads. . . ❓What INHIBITS iron absorption?? - Too much cows milk🥛 (children 1-3 years only need max 300ml milk/day) - Tannins in tea 🍵 - Phenolic compounds in chocolate 🍫 and coffee ☕️ - Phytates and oxalates in some green veggies and WG foods . . MYTH #5 for #fussyfriday . “Eating is a 2-step process: you sit down and you eat” . . ❌ FALSE! As I mentioned a few weeks ago, eating is NOT an easy task for babies 👶🏼 and children 👧🏻 to master. But with practice, feeding skills can be gradually learnt and developed. . . 🍽 There are actually 3️⃣2️⃣ steps to eating according to the #sosapproach to feeding 😳 . . These steps involve: 👀 seeing food on the table 🥢 touching food with utensils. 🖐 touching food with a hand 👃 smelling a food. 👅 licking a food. 👄 taking a small bite of a food. 🍽 and finally eating a food! . . 👩‍🍳 How can you as parents help your child? * Involve your child in food preparation...stirring 🥄 chopping 🔪 (with supervision!) mashing🍴 rolling, kneading etc * Involve your child in food shopping 🛒 * Let your child help with unpacking groceries 🥫 * Allow your child to serve food to others at the table 🥘 * Encourage ‘messy food play’ away from meal times 😝 ...start with dry foods such as dry pasta or rice, move onto cornflour (add water 💦 to change the texture) then you could try wet/sticky foods such as hiding small toys in jelly. There’s only ONE rule...no pressure to eat! 🤩 * Have a ‘learning plate’ 🍽at the table where you can place new foods, so that your child has exposure to these foods 🥗 . . 😊I hope this is helpful! If your child is Underweight, Overweight or if your child suffers from Obesity ... Talking to your child about weight is a very sensitive topic and it’s better if the parents avoid having this conversation with their child because if not done right can affect the child’s self esteem and body acceptance and in certain cases can lead to eating disorders ...before you talk to your child consult your pediatrician or pediatric nutritionist (and I insist on pediatric nutritionist because not all dietitians are trained to know how to deal with kids or intervene In case of a weight problem).. your pediatrician might also refer you to a pediatric dietitian. During the session, she will assess your child’s nutritional history and tells you if your child’s weight is good for their age and height. Keep in mind that your child should not attend the first session and depending on the age the dietitian will decide if she will do a one on one intervention with the child or just follow up with the parents alone #kidsnutritionist #weightintervention #nutrition #diet #dietitian #food #lifestyle #dietitianindubai #kidsdietitian #
❓When should I introduce eggs 🍳 and peanuts 🥜 to my baby? . . 🥜 First thing to say is that when I say peanuts I do NOT mean whole nuts as they pose a choking risk to children under the age of 5 years. What I do mean is smooth peanut butter (thinned down) or “puffed peanut” snacks for babies or finely ground nuts . . 🍳 For eggs choose those with the ‘British Lion Stamp’ or if not only use well cooked or hard boiled eggs. . . 🥜🍳 So WHEN can these foods be introduced? They can both be introduced from around 6 months of age after your baby has had first tastes. Anytime between the ages of 6 and 12 months is a good idea as research has shown this can help prevent an allergy in the future. It’s also important to keep offering these (and other) allergenic foods once you’ve introduced them to continue your baby’s tolerance. . . 👶🏼 ECZEMA & ALLERGIES If your baby has early onset eczema (in the first 3 months) and/or another allergy, they may benefit from the introduction of egg 🍳 and peanuts 🥜 earlier, between 4 and 6 months of age, alongside other foods. There is new guidance for parents and HCPs (July 2018) from BSACI and BDA FASG that I will reference below. If your baby has SEVERE eczema, you may wish to speak with your HCP before introducing egg and peanut as they may suggest skin prick tests first. See the reference below for more information 👇🏻 https://www.bsaci.org/about/early-feeding-guidance . . WHAT can I use? 🥜 For peanuts you can use a thin spread of smooth PB on toast or a teaspoon of thinned down PB (1 tsp PB mixed with 1 tsp warm water) stirred into porridge 🥣 or fruit purée or “puffed peanut” snacks or finely ground nuts. . . 🍳 For eggs you can introduce them as scrambled eggs, boiled eggs cut up or mashed up or an omelette cut into strips. . . ❗️PLEASE NOTE ❗️ Not every baby with eczema has a food allergy, but the EARLIER the onset and the more SEVERE the eczema is, the more likely it is to be associated with a food allergy. . . Ilyen a gombóc is. . . 🍎 Hungarian cottage cheese dumplings: 200g cottage cheese/ricotta 1 large egg 50 g oat bran lemon rind/cinnamon #kidsdietitian #hozzataplalas #dietetikusreggeli #healthykids #healthykidsfood #healthykidsmeals #dietitian #cukormentes #glutenmentes
Who loves a burger? What makes restaurant-style meat burgers so tasty is the tender, fatty ground meat they use. But all that fatty richness means the meat has poorer nutrient quality, lower protein content and higher saturated fat, which can all contribute to raising our bad cholesterol levels. So why not try our healthy makeover on this family favourite! In our burger recipe we use lean ground meat, which has high protein and nutrient quality, and there are hidden vegetables and beans which provide fibre, protein and vitamin C - and also make the patties juicier and tender. Let’s chat about kid’s and protein. I often hear parents saying they are worried there child isn’t getting enough protein. Especially parents with fussy eaters, protein is the one macronutrient that parents worry about the most. - As a pediatric dietitian, it is often the nutrient I worry about least in children as most kids are getting enough protein and in some cases they may be getting too much protein. - In this blog post I talk about kids and protein and how much your child actually needs. I also uncover what could happen if your child has too much protein especially when they are young. My take home messages were: 1️⃣ Up to 70% of children with IgE-mediated cow’s milk 🥛 or egg 🍳 allergy can tolerate baked milk/egg (BUT may need oral challenge in hospital 🏥 to check, before reintroduction) . 2️⃣ The earlier the onset of eczema (under 4 months of age) and the more severe the eczema is, the more likely it is to be associated with a food allergy . 3️⃣ There is much more recognition now of the impact of food allergies on the QoL of children and families (ideally need psychologist involved) . 4️⃣ There are MANY milk alternatives available now in supermarkets but must be aware if they are fortified with calcium and other relevant micronutrients (iodine, vitaminB12, B2 etc). Newest one coming SOON is coconut 🥥 ‘super’ drink from @kokodairyfree fortified with many micronutrients including #iodine yay! 😀 . 5️⃣ ‘Supertasters’ have an increased density of a certain type of taste buds on their tongue 👅! . 6️⃣ LOADS more but I won’t bore you! 🤣 . . Paula x 🍎 . . #childrensdietitian #allergydietitian #kidswithfoodallergies #cpd #dietitiancpd #tinytotsnutrition 🍎 #kidsdietitian #allergyresearch #foodallergies
🥣 Should I use home-made or shop bought purées for my baby? #Mumday . . 😳 This is a bit of a controversial one and a very personal choice, depending on the individual circumstances of a family. . . 🤔 Please note I’m not pointing a finger at any one brand of baby food, just talking generally about packaged puréed foods marketed for babies. . . 📝 A few of my thoughts about shop bought purées: 1️⃣ They are expensive! . 2️⃣ They tend to be less energy and nutrient-dense than home made foods (NOTE: breast milk contains 65-70kcals per 100ml and complementary foods beyond first tastes should contain AT LEAST this amount of energy plus offering other critical nutrients such as iron, zinc, essential fats) . 3️⃣ They tend to be very sweet and often have fruit as the main ingredient even though they may be marketed as a ‘vegetable’ purée (NOTE: babies are born with an innate liking for sweet things and they need repeated opportunities to learn to like veggies and other savoury flavours ) 🥦🍅🥕🥑🍆 . 4️⃣ If babies suck directly from pouches they are not learning valuable biting and chewing skills . 5️⃣ The textures tend to be very smooth (stage 1) and then smooth with lumps (stage 2). This texture can be tricky for babies to deal with. Home made purées can be gradually thickened up and soft lumps added. . BUT I must also mention that: ⏰ They are convenient when out and about or if you are short of time 🥦 Look out for savoury only options as they ARE available in some brands, you just need to look! . . TAKE HOME MESSAGES: * It’s fine to use shop bought purées occasionally but try not to rely on them 💯% * Offer soft finger foods alongside (any) purées from 6 months of age to develop feeding skills * Aim to offer nutrient-dense foods from 6 months to complement breast milk (or formula) focusing on iron rich foods . . 👶🏼 Do you want to learn more about #weaning or #complementaryfeeding ?? Why not come along to one of my weaning workshops with @busylizzykingston on 23rd November and @busylizzyrichmondtwickenham on 26th November #weaningwisdom #weaningquestions #weaningbaby #complementaryfeeding #weaningworkshops #kidsdietitian #kidsnutrition #infantnutrition #childnutritionist
Did you know? Acquiring new few food “likes” is a learning process? . We often think of food preferences as something that’s hard wired in. . “Suzy doesn’t like eggs.” . “Billy doesn’t like tomatoes.” . But, with an open mind, we can learn to like most foods! . That goes for kids and adults alike, wink wink. . Kids have an inherent interest in learning so if we reframe eating food this way, it helps them to keep that OPEN MIND I was talking about before. If you set your mind against liking something, the odds are high that your brain will interpret the taste as unenjoyable. . My friend, Ashley, and fellow Dietitian @veggiesandvirtue has come up with a clever way to categorize foods according to your kids’ current taste preferences. . ✏️ Learn it: have not yet acquired the taste for 👍🏻 Like it: will eat it but it’s not their favourite ❤️ Love it: will eat enthusiastically . I told my five year old about this idea and he really took to it! He made up a song for it but then became camera shy when I tried to record it :) . When deciding what foods to set before your child, try to offer a mix of foods they like, love, and are still learning to enjoy! . . . #learnitlikeitloveit #happyhealthyeaters #feedingkids #raisinghealthykids #healthykids #feedingtoddlers #pickyeaters #pickyeating #pickyeater #fussyeater #fussyeating #nourishedkids #ohheymama #mamasofinstagram #momblogger #parentingtip #parentingwin #momwin #momlife #dietitianmom #foodbattles #kidswillbekids #fussyeatingtips #kidsdietitian #familyfood #kidfriendly #rdapproved
MYTH #3 for #fussyfriday “Certain foods should only be eaten at certain times of the day” ⏰ . . ⏰ For example: Breakfast cereal 🥣 or toast 🍞 or eggs 🍳 or pancakes 🥞 should only be eaten at breakfast time... . . ❌ FALSE! Food is just food... it is not breakfast food or lunch food or dinner food or “junk” food 🍔 . . 🥑 Of course, some foods are more nutritious than others BUT it is not helpful to label foods as “good” or “bad” foods or “breakfast foods” as this does not teach children how to eat or help children to develop a healthy relationship with food 🥘 . . 🍝 If your child wants to eat pasta, chicken and peas at breakfast time, THAT’S OKAY! 😀 My youngest daughter often has a pasta or rice dish or leftovers for breakfast and I’m ok with that 👍🏻😊 . . 🍟 So called “junk” foods can play a helpful role as stepping stones to teach children with feeding difficulties to accept a wider range of foods. This is because these “junk” foods typically have an easy texture to manage and can have a big sensory appeal by being very spicy 🌶 or crunchy . . 👀 Look our for next #fussyfridays myth about children and eating! . . . 🆘 If you think your child may have a feeding difficulty or you are worried about your child’s #fussyeating get in touch with me, I’m trained as a feeding therapist using the SOS approach to feeding. . . #fussyfriday #kidsdietitian #mythsabouteating #sosapproach #sosapproachtofeeding #fussyeaters #fussyeatingtips #pickyeating #childrensdietitian #tinytotsnutrition 🍎 #kidsnutrition #parentsoffussyeaters #tipsforfussyeaters #mythbusting

🍭 HALLOWEEN SWEETS 🍬 . . ❓What is your strategy with your kids?? 🤔 . . 😋 I’ll share with you what I’ll be doing and hopefully give you some ideas: 1) Give your kids a balanced meal including protein and veggies BEFORE going out trick or treating... 2) Give your kids a SMALL bag or bowl to collect sweets so when it’s full, that’s it! 3) I won’t be overly restrictive about how many sweets they eat...my girls are 9 and 12 years old and I trust them to decide when they’ve had enough 4) For younger kids, an idea is the ‘switch witch’ 🧙‍♀️ (a bit like the tooth fairy) where kids leave out their leftover sweets tonight for the 🧙‍♀️to collect in exchange for a small toy... (My girls are too old for this but I think it’s a great idea for younger kids) . . 😊 Most importantly, HAVE FUN!! 🎃 🧙‍♀️ 👻 😈👹💀☠️👿🤡 . . 🎃 HAPPY HALLOWEEN 🎃 . . #halloween 🎃 #happyhalloween #familyfun #childrensdietitian #kidsdietitian #tinytotsnutrition 🍎 #halftermfun

⭐️This week’s #Mumday #weaningquestion is: How many milk feeds should my 9 month old baby have? 🤱🍼 . . ⭐️By 9 months of age, your baby should be having 3 ‘mini meals’ per day and feeding 🤱approx 3-4 times per day or having approximately 500ml of formula milk 🍼per day (Some babies may drink slightly more or slightly less than this) . . ⭐️ By 9 months of age, your baby will be fairly well established on solids and this should include plenty of soft finger foods and foods of different textures to develop your baby’s biting and chewing skills as well as hand-eye coordination. . . 💦 Also aim to offer water at each ‘mini meal’ from an open cup such as @babycuphello or @doidyweaning or a free flowing beaker (without a valve) . . . ⭐️Aim to offer at each ‘mini meal’: • A protein and iron rich food such as meatballs 🥩 chicken 🍗 beans/lentils/pulses, eggs 🍳, oily fish 🐟 tofu . • A starchy carbohydrate food such as a breakfast cereal 🥣 (look for iron-fortified varieties) oats porridge 🥣 bread 🍞 pasta 🍜 potatoes 🥔 rice 🍚 or other grain . • 1-2 fruits 🍒🍑🥝🍉🍌and veggies 🌽 🍅🍆🥑🥦🥕 . • Offer a full fat dairy product such as yoghurt or cheese 🧀 or milk added to cereal TWICE a day (note: dairy foods are also high in protein) . . . ⭐️ Remember to offer SMALL portions and let your baby’s appetite guide you 😊 . . ⭐️ By 9-10 months of age your baby will start to master the ‘pincer grip’ and pick up smaller pieces of food. . . ⭐️ If your baby is breastfeeding 🤱 or taking less than 500ml formula milk 🍼 per day, remember a vitamin D supplement of 10 micro grams per day. . . 👀 Look our for next week’s #weaningquestion answered on #mumday or send me your question! . . #babynutrition #kidsnutrition #kidsdietitian #childrensdietitian #infantnutrition #weaning #complementaryfeeding #weaningbaby #tinytotsnutrition 🍎 #weaningquestion #mumday #weaningwisdom

MYTH #2 “Eating is easy!” #fussyfriday ❌ FALSE! Eating is actually a very complex task involving all of our senses and many organ systems of the body. . . 😊 For a child to eat well, they must have the following: - Proper posture when sitting - Appropriate coordination between breathing and eating - Good large and fine motor skills - Good strength in the muscles around the mouth, cheeks and tongue 😛 - A well functioning digestive system . . . 🍽 For most of us eating IS easy a 2️⃣ step process... you sit at the table and you eat! However, for many children who have sensory or other difficulties with eating, there are actually 3️⃣2️⃣ steps to eating according to the #sosapproach to feeding . . . ❓What can parents do to help? The best thing you can do for your baby 👶🏼 or child 🧒🏼 is to let the get MESSY! Let them experience food with ALL their senses and provide a happy and relaxed 😊 atmosphere at mealtimes. Embrace the MESS 😝 . . . 😏 If you are concerned about your LO’s eating, get in touch with me, I can help you. ⭐️ MEATBALLS ⭐️ . . . ⭐️ Meatballs are a great way of introducing iron-rich meats to babies . . . ⭐️ The texture is soft and the size is great for little hands to pick up . . . ⭐️ They are so versatile... you can use any minced meat you like such as chicken 🍗 turkey, beef 🥩 or lamb . . ⭐️ Top Tip: use the darker poultry meats such as chicken or turkey thigh meat as it’s higher in iron than the white meat . . . ⭐️ Iron is one of the ‘superstar’ nutrients for babies... requirements increase from 6 months so aim to offer iron rich foods twice per day . . ⭐️ Other iron rich foods include oily fish 🐟 eggs 🍳 beans/lentils, iron fortified cereals, tofu, nut 🥜 butters . . #ironnutrition #kidsnutrition #babynutrition #weaningbaby #weaningnutrition #tinytotsnutrition 🍎 #kidsdietitian #fingerfoodideas #ironrichfoods

It’s Mental Health Week! Our children’s mental well-being matters. Mental health is how we think, feel and act. It affects how a child feels about himself/herself, relates to other people and handles stress, change and other life situations. As many as 1 in 7 children aged 4-17 in Australia experience a mental health disorder. We have fabulous services here in Australia such as @headspace_aus @kidshelplineau @reachout_aus and @youthfocuswa There is also help at school and in the community privately with assistance through a GP for a mental health care plan. However only 17% of children who need the services access them. 🗣So let’s talk about it. Let’s get our kids the help they need, when they need it. Be proactive, “Mental Health Starts Where We Learn” @mentalhealthweekwa and build resilience in our children early. #mentalhealthweek #mentalhealthweek2018 #mentalhealthstartshere #moveformentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #westernkidshealth #kidspsychology #kidsphysio #kidsot #kidsdietitian

YOGHURTS . . 🙄The BBC article on sugars in yoghurts yesterday was such a misleading article! . . 🥛 Yoghurt has 5-6g lactose per 100ml which should NOT be counted in the ‘sugars’. The labelling of dairy products is very confusing for this reason! . . 📝 I always suggest that parents check the ingredients list for added sugars. Ingredients are always listed in descending order, so if sugar or glucose syrup etc is in the first 2 ingredients it’s very high! . . 🤔 Let’s not forget that yoghurt is a really good source of calcium, protein, iodine and some have live cultures so good for gut health too. This my husband Ryan and our puppy Dustin. Believe it or not but until the start of this year, we were no-way, not-ever going to get a dog. 🐕 You see Ryan is allergic. 🐶 Despite years of nagging from our children (and subtle hints from me) the answer way always no. 😞 Then we 'borrowed' a friends labradoodle and Ryan was absolutely fine - well that was a revelation! 🐕 This kicked of the search for the perfect puppy - Ryan and I would go visit a litter, Ryan would cuddle and play with the Mummy dog and we would wait and see what happened. 🤞 In October 2017 we drove 50 miles to Ashford to meet Kippy and her litter of 10 puppies....and we had success! 🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶 Dustin was announced to the children at Christmas. when they unwrapped a dog bowl and collar looking mystified and he came to live with us on my birthday in January! 🎄 #behindthescenes #parenting #childrensnutrition #dietitian #nutritionist #kidsdietitian #childrensdietitian #kidsnutrition

⭐️ FINGER FOODS ⭐️ . . 🥄 Whether you are doing traditional weaning with puréed foods or baby led weaning, soft finger foods should be introduced from 6 months. . . 👍🏻 Finger foods help babies to develop chewing and biting skills as well as developing their motor skills and coordination. . . 👆🏻First finger foods should be around the same shape and size as an adult little finger. . . . 🥦 Large pieces work best at first while your baby is still learning to pick up foods. The food should stick out of the top of your baby’s fist. Pincer grip only develops at around 9-10 months so avoid small pieces of food at first. . . . Some ideas of soft finger foods to try from 6 months: 🥦Cooked broccoli, Cooked cauliflower 🥕Cooked carrots (cut lengthways), Cooked green beans or asparagus 🍠Sweet potato, roasted 🍑Ripe peach 🥝Ripe kiwi Ripe mango 🍈Ripe melon 🥑Avocado Bananas 🍌 *Salmon fish cakes 🐟 *Meatballs *Eggy bread 🍞 *Omelette (cut into strips) 🍳 *Mini bean or lentil burgers *Slow cooked beef or lamb 🥩 *Nut butter spread on toast *iron-rich ideas marked with a ‘*’ . . . ⭐️TOP TIP⭐️ Leave a little skin on the fruit and veggie finger foods (rinse and scrub fruit/veg first) so that your baby can grip them better 🤜🏻 . . 😝 I had great fun today chatting to a lovely group of mums @busylizzykingston in my #weaning workshop! Thank you for having me! 😀 . . ❓Some great questions today, particularly about food #allergies and when to introduce the most common food allergens. . . 🤓 The advice is to introduce the allergenic foods (cows milk 🥛 egg 🍳 peanut 🥜 tree nuts, wheat, soya, sesame and fish 🐟) from 6 months of age, one at a time. . . 👶🏼 If your baby has early onset eczema and/or an existing food allergy, they are considered at ‘higher risk’ of developing food allergies. They may benefit from earlier introduction of (cooked) egg 🍳 and (ground) peanuts 🥜 BUT this requires a discussion with a paediatrician who can advise you if you can introduce these foods at home OR if your baby should be supervised. . . #weaningbaby #weaningworkshops #complementaryfeeding #foodallergies #weaningquestions #paediatricdietitian #kidsnutrition #infantnutrition #kidsdietitian #tinytotsnutrition 🍎 #busylizzy

🥦 GREEN STUFF FIRST 🥦 . . 💚 The latest research has shown that offering veggies (especially ‘greens’) “first, frequently and in variety” is the way to go when introducing solids to your baby . . 💚 Babies are born with an innate liking for sweet tastes and their taste buds need to be trained to like bitter, sour and savoury tastes . . 💚 Start by offering green vegetable purées with some of your baby’s usual milk. Good options include green beans, spinach, broccoli, kale . . 💚 Offer cooked green vegetables as finger foods as well . . 💚 Next start offering other less bitter veggies as purées or finger foods 🍠🥔🥕🥑 . . 💚 Once these are accepted try sweeter veggies and then a variety of fruits 🍉🍌🍓🥝 . . 💚 Remember to also start offering iron-rich foods alongside these veggies when your baby is over 6 months old as iron stores start to run out from around 6-7 months of age . . 💚 Want to know more about #weaningyourbaby ? Then get in touch with me! I can help you and your LO on their #weaningjourney . . 💚 I will also be running a series of weaning workshops with @busylizzyrichmondtwickenham @busylizzykingston @busylizzy_putney so you can also get in touch with them. . . 💚 Check out @littlefoodieorg fact sheet on ‘green stuff first’ it’s fab (thanks for the inspiration!) 👍🏻 👶🏼 🥄 🥦 😀 🍗 🍑 🥝 #weaningbaby #complementaryfeeding #paediatricdietitian #kidsnutrition #infantnutrition #kidsdietitian #weaningworkshops #childnutritionexpert
It’s lunchbox time again! Include a combination of fruit (apple, mandarin) vegetable (carrot, edamame), carbohydrate (the humble sandwich), protein (egg), calcium foods (cheese), and a homemade goodie (a no sugar banana coconut and almond bread). Lunchboxes don’t have to look designer, they just need to be packed with good nutrition #backtoschool #lunchbox #dietitian #kidsdietitian
