I feel so blessed to have been able to observe these Lions/Lionesses living their best lives in the Masai Mara and the Serengeti. I was in awe watching them, especially while they stalked their prey. If there is one thing I’ve learned it is that the Lioness is extremely patient. Because lions are not as fast as their prey they hunt in two methods. The first method most of us witnessed in the Lion King, during Mufassa and Simba’s pouncing exercise with Zazu. Much like the movie these lionesses use the tall grass as cover while they stalked a baby buffalo. What I found so interesting, was their silent signals. They used their tails to signal each other on when to move and where to position themselves. They formed a triangle behind their prey, using the two on the outside to move in while the one in the middle strikes. Unfortunately, the other humans in the truck did not have as much patience as the lionesses. We then went to another location where a lioness was waiting in the bushes with her young cub. The sun was getting hot and her baby needed to eat. There were gazelles and antelopes grazing nearby so she took cover and began to watch her prey. Unfortunately for her she was spotted. What I learned about lions then, was that if spotted, the lion will sit up and stare nonchalantly into the distance.
While watching the lions in the Serengeti we arrived just as they caught their meal for the day, a zebra. This had to be the most interesting! There was a chain of command to who got to eat first. Of course the lionesses were first in line eating their guts full but while they were eating the scavengers made their way in; first the vultures then the hyenas. While we watched there was one brave a** hyena that decided to approach the lionesses while they were still eating. BIG MISTAKE! He quickly ran back to his little pack and waited his turn. Now while all of this is happening there were about 50 Zebras in the distance some eating and a few watching the lions eating their cousin. (Too graphic to share)
One thing I noticed is that the male lion is extremely lazy!
Enjoy some of my shots of these beautiful animals!📸
