On this day last year, I said goodbye to one of the strongest, most wholesome groups of friends and coworkers I’ve ever had.
We all met in Northern California to work on a farm for the summer. The farm was in a beautiful valley, four hours from the Bay Area, half an hour down a dirt road, and an hour from the beach. It paid us, housed us, and fed us. Whenever we weren’t working, we were on vacation.
This group of people helped me believe that my generation of humans could possibly save the world. Before this point I’d spent my life in cities on the East Coast, with lots of beautiful ideas on how to live outside the reach of The Man, but none of these ideas executed. In Mendocino County, we all slept on beaches, in redwoods, by rivers, and atop mountains; without wifi or worry about current events. I have few times in my life where I felt as alive as I did that summer.
