I'm back! So sorry for the disappearance but I was on my honeymoon in HAWAII! It was honestly one of the best vacations I have ever been on. The overall personalities of the Hawaiian people were incredible and so welcoming. I cannot wait to go back. Here is a little glimpse into what I was doing 24/7 For over a week! And wish I could go back! Also I figured this still counts for a Bookstagram photo since you can peek my Smaug The Hobbit tattoo and the corner of my Daughter of Smoke and Bone tattoo!
QOTD: If you could get me to read and SINGLE book to get a better understanding of you as a person, what would that book be?⬇️⬇️
For all my fellow Lord of the Rings fans, this lovely little wooden card will be up in the Etsy shop well before Valentine's 😊😊 I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
All my out of box funkos with my inbox for LOTR. It’s that serious 👀
This thing all things devours;
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel;
Grinds hard stones to meal;
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats mountain down.
The armor sets and weapons in this game are fucking out of this world! Happy that I decided to jump back into Middle-earth: Shadow of War. There’s a lot of cool legendarium here as well, like the ritual rising of the Balrog and even Shelob. This game is apparently non-canon, which is a huge disappointment. For the longest, I have been wanting to buy, The Silmarillion and read it.

“All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” JRR Tolkien
varnishing, second coat. Since I paint very thinly with oil paint and oil washes I don't use oil based varnish. After years of experimentation I've settled upon a two-part mixture of my own, using a Satin and Matte varnish. Because I've found Satin to be too glossy, and garish looking. And Matte on its own to be too flat and dull. My combination gives me the nice even sheen that I'm looking for.
After brushing the painting with a thin coat I rebrush over the surface and press the varnish into the surface. Each subsequent layer brushing in the opposite direction. I do this for two (sometimes three) thin layers, making sure each dries fully before the next thin layer. I know this by sight and by smelling the surface.
If you coat too thick, or don't let each layer of varnish dry you'll end up with cloudiness. I brush in small angled strokes to help break up the way the light hits the surface, this avoids a glass-like surface and keeps it evenly textured. The use of brush-on varnish evens out the entire surface of the painting, eliminating flat and glossy spots which I often see in oil paintings.
Finally, after letting it dry 24 hours, to achieve the smooth velvet-like surface I like I spray two thin layers of retouch varnish evenly over the surface (careful to keep moving, so it doesn't pool up on any part of the surface). This "pulls" up all of the layers of color, giving it *pop* at all angles, so one can see all of the many glazing and wash layers I've put into the painting.
Lastly, since this painting is on uncradled art board I am framing it in a custom color washed frame.

“Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away, ere break of day,
To claim our long-forgotten gold.” ✨
One of the aspects of The Hobbit trilogy by Peter Jackson that I truly appreciated was that he payed homage to Tolkien’s music. I was so happy that they included this beautifully sung song. It was not only hauntingly gorgeous, but also fit the way I imagined it would sound. I downloaded the soundtrack as soon as it became available for purchase (as I have done with all of The Lord of the Rings soundtrack sets) and have listened to this particular piece more than I care to admit. ✨
The Hobbit is incredibly special to me. I’ve mentioned this before, but this is the first book I ever read from J.R.R. Tolkien. It opened the door to Middle Earth for me. And so it came to pass that my obsession for Tolkien and every word he ever wrote awakened. When was the first time you read The Hobbit? ✨
Have a magical day! ✨
“...I will not say the day is done, nor bid the Stars farewell.” - Sam’s Song from the Lord of the Rings
I love all of Tolkien’s poetry, but this is one of my favorites! Such a stunning declaration of hope despite everything.
Pippin: I didn't think it would end this way.
Gandalf: End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it.💫
Pippin: What? Gandalf? See what?
Gandalf: White shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise.🌅
Pippin: Well, that isn't so bad.
Gandalf: No. No, it isn't.
