I’m never going to be a bookstagrammer who does monthly bookstacks—mainly because I find it too stressful. Anyone else feel this way? . I’m a mood reader, so I just go with whatever I feel like on any given day. Sometimes I’m reading 5 books at once, sometimes I slowly read the same book for weeks. It’s all good. Also, I use the library for most of my reads, so I’m constantly returning & checking out books. . That being said, thought it’d be fun to share a snapshot of my partial #bookstack ! Some I’m currently reading, some I’ve recently finished, some I’ll likely read next. Have you read any of these? . . . . . . #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #instabook #igreads #bibliophile #booklover #bookworm #booknerd #unitedbookstagram #booksbooksbooks #booksofinstagram #bookaddict #bookspines #booksandplants #yaagyasi #alismith #jhumpalahiri #dodiesmith #reynagrande #christelledabos #awinterspromise #dianesetterfield #dianagabaldon #dianagabaldonbooks #eoincolfer #tbr #tbrpile #currentlyreading #windowsill

one of my favorite writers, she is. Jhumpalahiri...

Another wonderful read from last year while vacationing in Hawaii. Tagore’s stories are simple, but with so much heart in them! I was never a fan of short stories, but recently I’ve started appreciating them more. Also, I’ve been lucky to read some really good ones lately. Some that stand out are : 1. Dubliners by James Joyce 2. A slanting of the sun by Donal Ryan 3. Interpreter of maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri . . Do you guys like short stories? «Vengo a trovare anche te papà. […] . . Book Title: The Namesake Author: Jhumpa Lahiri Category: Literature & Fiction Priced @ Rs. 560 Laibary URL: https://goo.gl/Uzv8LJ Book Description: ‘The Namesake’ is the story of a boy brought up Indian in America. 'When her grandmother learned of Ashima's pregnancy, she was particularly thrilled at the prospect of naming the family's first sahib. And so Ashima and Ashoke have agreed to put off the decision of what to name the baby until a letter comes…' For now, the label on his hospital cot reads simply BABY BOY GANGULI. But as time passes and still no letter arrives from India, American bureaucracy takes over and demands that 'baby boy Ganguli' be given a name. In a panic, his father decides to nickname him 'Gogol' – after his favourite writer. Brought up as an Indian in suburban America, Gogol Ganguli soon finds himself itching to cast off his awkward name, just as he longs to leave behind the inherited values of his Bengali parents. And so he sets off on his own path through life, a path strewn with conflicting loyalties, love and loss… Spanning three decades and crossing continents, Jhumpa Lahiri's much-anticipated first novel is a triumph of humane story-telling. Elegant, subtle and moving, ‘The Namesake’ is for everyone who loved the clarity, sympathy and grace of Lahiri's Pulitzer Prize-winning debut story collection, ‘Interpreter of Maladies’. #laibarydeals #laibarynp #laibary #nepalreads #bookstagram #bookstagramnepal #bookworm #bookdragons #booknerd #readabook #readingisfun #onlinebookstore #bookoholic #nepalonlineshopping #thenamesake #jhumpalahiri #cultrural #india #contemporary #indianwriting #literature #novel #fiction
I'm rather (very) late with this, but I thought I might as well still make and post it in case any of you were looking for some books from this region. I didn't manage to read much in August because I just didn't have the time. I didn't read all the books on this list, but read most of them and am very much looking forward to making a podcast episode about The Lowland by Jhumpa Lahiri because (spoiler alert) I was so glad I read it and can't wait to share that with you all. In the meantime, have you read any of these? What did you think? . P.S. I discussed The Reluctant Fundamentalist with @shereadsox in episode 11. A book that I keep going back to. This is a story of Gogol and his struggle to find his identity. It takes us through the life of Gogol and his family and the slight nuisances of any Indian household. What Gogol experiences is exactly what you have experienced at his age, and even though he lives miles apart and at a different time you still feel the same restlessness, the same ache and longing that he feels. There is a beautiful German word called “Sehnsucht” which means a longing for a place (often symbolic) that is faraway. This is exactly what Gogol's journey is like. And what Lahiri does brilliantly is that she takes emotions and presents them subtly, not once in the process underpowering or exaggerating them. In the end what the book leaves us with is a little bit of reassurance that wherever life takes us, at one point we come at peace with this longing. It becomes a part of us, just slightly making us shift in our seats once in a while. Lahiri's writing is lucid and simple, everything is expressed in just the right amount which makes it a perfect recipe for a nice quiet evening. A must read! .... #jhumpalahiri #thenamesake #indianauthors #bookstotreasure #loveforliterature #worksthatstaywithyou #bookstoread #bookstagram

I don't know why I waited this long to read my first Jhumpa Lahiri. Kaima (The Namesake) left me a little speechless and it immediately became one of my favourite reads this year. It tells the story of Gogol, a boy born to immigrant parents, trying to make it through his childhood into adulthood (hello September's #Readtheyear challenge 👋🏻). He struggles with his identity, with his roots, and trying to accept himself. I also chose this as my first read for #everydayiswomensdayreadingchallenge - the idea is to read at least one classic written by a woman before the next women's day (modern / contemporary classics included!). I've made a conscious choice of trying to read more books by female authors during the last few years - which is not to say I don't read or enjoy books written by men, many of my favourite authors are male. I just think it is important to remember the voices that often get shunned, especially as literary canons used to be overruled by men (they might still be, it's been a while since my literature studies but things like this tend to change slowly). I'm hoping to read more Finnish classics inspired by this challenge - but also classics from around the world. "It was not in my nature to be an assertive person. I was used to looking to others for guidance, for influence, sometimes for the most basic cues of life. And yet writing stories is one of the most assertive things a person can do. Fiction is an act of willfulness, a deliberate effort to reconceive, to rearrange, to reconstitute nothing short of reality itself. Even among the most reluctant and doubtful of writers, this willfulness must emerge. Being a writer means taking the leap from listening to saying, "Listen to me." — Jhumpa Lahiri⠀ .⠀ Photograph by Susanna Howe, C. Vogue.⠀ .⠀ #Mondaymotivation #JhumpaLahiri #Wordsofwisdom #bookstagram #writerscommunity #books #bookshelf #literature #writersofinstagram #writersofcolour #weneeddiversebooks #diversebookbloggers #bameinpublishing #writerslife #quotestoliveby #quoteoftheday #bookworm #Authors

🌊 Please watch my IGTV video for an extended review about this book 🌊 Just finished reading Unaccustomed Earth by Jhumpa Lahiri. What do you know - the staunch short story cynic can be won over! After a favourable response to Interpreter of Maladies, this collection of short stories is another rousing success for Lahiri’s quiet and subtle talent. She is a writer that can take the most significant and most trivial human experiences and make them into something profound and meaningful. Unaccustomed Earth contains a selection of stories that, despite their subtle differences, all boil down to the experiences of wealthy Indian families who face a clash of mentalities as they move abroad. Of course I’m over-simplifying, but this author rarely strays far from her comfort zone. I know others have criticised Lahiri for this, but topics of displacement and assimilation are things that, as an immigrant, I find endlessly fascinating. I find it even harder to hold anything against Lahiri as she does it so well. Her writing is well-paced, warming and due to the restrictions of her chosen format, usually quite scant. I would normally use that word to complain about writers’ lack of imagination and originality but while Lahiri’s writing is undeniably succinct, it doesn’t jeopardise character development for brevity. Lahiri’s real talent is putting common human sentiments and experiences into words, and the author’s accessible style makes this an inclusive reading experience for anyone who relates to the characters in the collection. Pitched perfectly to be enjoyed by wide audiences, Unaccustomed Earth proves to be a comforting and often emotional message of solidarity. Unlike the aforementioned Maladies, this collections has no let downs. Every story is as engaging and heartfelt as the last. While some readers may become disillusioned with Lahiri’s insistence to write about people whose experiences persistently reflect her own, this is a confident collection that samples this celebrated author’s subdued craft. Overall Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I finally finished The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri a few days ago! ... Synopsis {from the book} : Meet the Ganguli family, new arrivals from Calcutta, trying their best to become Americans even as they pine for home. The name they bestow on their firstborn, Gogol, betrays all the conflicts of honoring tradition in a new world—conflicts that will haunt Gogol on his own winding path through divided loyalties, comic detours, and wrenching love affairs. ... I’ve always been so passionate about stories of immigrants and this one was no different. I could relate to many of the passages and pages in this book. As a second-generation Korean-American, my siblings and I had to constantly battle between the culture, tradition, and language of our motherland vs. America. We eventually found the happy medium but still to this day, the feeling of never quite belonging to one country or the other lingers.. . I could relate to Gogul/Nikhil and Moshumi, resisting the cultural & traditional expectations but later appreciating them. During our visit in Canada, my mother-in-law told me she regrets not teaching her children Chinese and sad that they don’t have much ties to Taiwan. Also made me think about my future children. How am I going to ensure they learn about my motherland Korea and learn to appreciate its culture, traditions, and values? Lots to think about. The only thing I did not like about this book was the love stories. Why is Lahiri so depressing? Why cannot she give her characters a happier life? Ugh. **Overall 🌟🌟🌟🌟💫 . We are heading back to Dallas tomorrow. Canada has been great! I got to experience fall and winter. Weather that if happened in Dallas that would’ve shut down the city. Lol. I was so glad to have met Charlotte from @charandbooks irl! We sipped on hot & frothy drinks and talked books, Bookstagram, and even medical-related stuff (since she and my husband are both in the medical field!) My husband got stuck in a reading trying to find us which was hilarious. Then we chose a book we recommended for each other for souvenirs! Love this community so much~💙
I love how Jhumpa Lahiri describes learning a new language in her book "In Other Words." She writes: "The unknown words remind me that there's a lot I don't know in this world." A language is something we cannot fully master in a lifetime, so we find joy in the the process itself. 📝 This antique necklace is part of my "In Other Words" collection: www.thedistillerymarket.com
I love this book so much! Re-read this for the second time and would highly recommend. #jhumpalahiri captures the internal identity struggles that many immigrants and children of immigrants face. So much of Gogol’s experiences growing up resonate with my own life. In particular, the culture clashes and conflicting expectations set by Gogol’s parents, his peers, society at large, and himself are so relatable to me. #thenamesake is beautifully written and articulates these subtle identity conflicts in understated ways. I’d also recommend her collection of short stories, the #interpreterofmaladies . 💕 #rorygilmorereadingchallenge
"While the astronauts, heroes forever, spent mere hours on the moon, I have remained in this new world for nearly thirty years. I know that my achievement is quite ordinary. I am not the only man to seek his fortune far from home, and certainly I am not the first. Still, there are times I am bewildered by each mile I have traveled, each meal I have eaten, each person I have known, each room in which I have slept. As ordinary as it all appears, there are times when it is beyond my imagination." . This collection of nine short stories mainly revolves around the lives of immigrants, their daily experiences and the problems they face in the foreign land. The stories have been written in simple language, and they simply flow. It presents a fresh perspective towards different kinds of relationships all around us, whether that'd be between spouses, or families, or even a take on the complex, though forbidden, infidelities. This book will impel you to feel emotions you've never felt before, as you plunge into the delicate weaving of Jhumpa Lahiri's "Interpreter of Maladies". . “I needed a different language: a language that was a place of affection and reflection.” One of my dreams is to start vacationing by myself in pursuit of languages. Spending a few months here or there to absorb the languages of our dynamic human race. In this book, #jhumpalahiri seeks to learn to express herself in another language, and this is her autobiographical account of the journey to mastering the expression of a new voice. And the really cool thing is that it is written in Italian, side by side with the English translation. The translation is written by a translator other than herself in order to protect her Italian- it’s one thing to learn a language, but to think, dream, and breathe another language is a completely different experience. Interpreter of Maladies . Lahiri's subtle, bittersweet ending is characteristic of the collection as a whole. Some of these nine tales are set in India, others in the United States, and most concern characters of Indian heritage. Yet the situations Lahiri's people face, from unhappy marriages to civil war, transcend ethnicity. As the narrator of the last story, "The Third and Final Continent," comments: "There are times I am bewildered by each mile I have traveled, each meal I have eaten, each person I have known, each room in which I have slept." In that single line Jhumpa Lahiri sums up a universal experience, one that applies to all who have grown up, left home, fallen in or out of love, and, above all, experienced what it means to be a foreigner, even within one's own family. . Edificante e poetico. #libribellissimi #libridaleggere #indiebookshop #jhumpalahiri
I didn’t get it until I got to the end. In that way, I now really appreciate the journey. #interpreterofmaladies #jhumpalahiri #pulitzerprizewinner

. . - Jhumpa Lahiri - Dove mi trovo . . #ritrovarsineilibri #dovemitrovo #jhumpalahiri #altrove #sempreinviaggio #inattesa #nonvedoloradiripartire #fermamai #libribelli #consiglidilettura #amoleggere #amoviaggiare #storiedivita #dietroadognifotounastoria #storiedisognatori #lecosechepiaccionoame #tempodiripartire #vagabonda #incontrispeciali #bookslover #lifestory #neverstoptravelling #beautifullife #wonderfulworld #saudade #nostos #letsgoeverywhere #wanderlusttribe #travelandlife #infinity_life
