I have a confused relationship with my dad. He has always been the alpha male, dominating how I behave, think and even tries to dictate my thoughts such as how to value friends.
He has many warped perspectives about life that might be seem negative to many, such as you don't need friends in life, don't give others a chance to hurt you. I had a hard time trying to speak logic with him because he can be very insistent with his opinion.
Through an attempt to understand more about my family tree, I found out a little about his childhood that might have shaped him into what he is today.
He came from a traditional Chinese family who is used to keep to their feelings. To cut it short, although my grandparents and great grandparents love their kids, they lack the ability to express their love openly. As a result, my dad is also equally handicapped with showing his love directly.
But he loves us, and there's no doubt about it - his ways of caring for us is through feeding us.
Mum has shared many times how he was concerned how thin I was as a kid #爸爸的孩子不能太瘦
and how he will feed me chicken rice (drumstick with additional rice!), and his proud face when I finish it all #把我养得白白胖胖是他的骄傲
When I started primary school, he will turn up during recess time to buy me food. Imagine while other kids need to queue for food, I just need to go canteen to find dad and the food will be on the table. That lasted till I was p3 after my bro joined me in the same primary school (my poor bro didn't enjoy the same privilege hehe). That's how my dad shows his love.
I gather that to show him love, I have to speak his language too, and yes, using food :) This dish from #ImperialTreasure
is one of his favourite dish and it is always funny to see how he will hint to dine there whenever we are at #Jem
While it look innocently bland, the dish is full of flavours and wok hei. Mum and I suspect that they fried it with salted fish infused oil and fish sauce.
The restaurant at Jem has ceased operation but I think some other outlets still carries this. Will need to do some research to find out which so that I can surprise my dad one of these days.
