It hardly seems fair to post just one photo per country - that’s 14 images - for a 2 year journey from Alaska to Argentina, but that’s what I’m doing, just bear in mind that the image I choose or the feelings I describe may not be representative of that country, or even that week! [Canada] - arriving in this country, a country I called home for two years on and off before my journey, brought with it a flood of emotions. Long periods of vague thoughtful melancholy on spruce lined roads, and hilarity from a wave of companions that dared to ‘take a seat’....yup, only 5 days into my journey I found that people actually did want to pedal with me on my tandem, though usually for less time than they thought due to the unrelenting pounding their rear end would get from the often unpaved roads.
This man, Steve Spratt, was just one example of a hitchhiker that, despite ‘Achilles the tandem’ not being the speediest way south, chose to experience a little sweat equity on their journey. Steve wasn’t aware I was riding a tandem until I stopped right in front of him, sitting on the side of a deserted highway, and he looked around me to reveal the spare seat. He joined me for about 24 hours, and smiled perhaps more than anyone that was to come. I remember we ate pasta that night near a creek, surrounded by stunted spruce, the usual attack mosquitoes, and kept company by a fox that climbed onto my bike seat for a minute to experience life in the saddle himself.
I left Steve mid morning the next day, very much the same way as I found him. Sitting happily on his backpack, waiting patiently for a car heading south. Steve liked life just the way it arrived, whether a car came, or whether he sat and listened to nothing but lazy mosquitoes and the idle moan of an occasional moose crossing the road.
Steve lives in Calgary now and works as a cattle rancher. He says hi.
