KIX Senshu Marathon Race Recap
First off let me tell you. Starting at the front of a race gives you the illusion that you’re as fast the elites and your first mile maybe a tad too fast 😂 Having said that, I did have my best half so far (1:35 PR if we don’t count the Revel downhill). After that the dang feet started to act up and had to back off a bit for the second half. Mile 14 we had to make the obligatory stop to say hello to the Mayor and take some selfies. At this point I made the decision to walk thru the water stations which were about 6K apart and take a bit of a break. That was pretty much the plan for the second half. The course is mostly flat but there were a handful of inclines, not enough to call them hills but inclines nonetheless.
Now, let me tell you about those bridges!! They don’t call them monster bridges for nothing, two bridges, you do them twice and the fact that they come at you at mile 21 is something else!! Holy cow they were brutal and I’m not ashamed to say I walked some of it. At about mile 24 my right hamstring almost gave up, first time that happened to me in a race. So of course, had to do a bit more walking. Once I got to the top of the second bridge (last climb) I went for broke. With about 1K to go, again another first, I did a little bit of ugly crying. Lots of emotions came over me, mostly about how far I’ve come and to have had my best race in such a beautiful country with an amazing experience and thinking about my kids was too much to hold the tears back #thereisnoshameincrying
Any who, super stocked with the time (6 minute PR) for a race that I wasn’t planning on racing hard, so to have PR with all the walking I did is even more satisfying. Massive shoutout my friend Erin who did amazing despite an injury (3:24). Talk about gutting it out! #impressive
Now I just need to get some rest, have my feet (PF) taken care of, get more serious about strength training and work on my second half finish. I can taste a BQ and beyond now 😉
Official Time: 3:21:41 - 7:42 pace
