Seymour Likely was not a single artist, but a collective formed by @ronaldhooft #idovunderink #aldertmantje
. In the spirit of #postmodernism
, they disputed things like art history, authenticity and the personal voice. For postmodernists truth did not exist, and every image and every idea belonged to everyone. In this work they play a complicated game of mistaken identity, undermining the status and the pontifical truths of established artists like #JosephBeuys
and his apprentice #BlinkyPalermo
. Palermo died in Sri Lanka in mysterious circumstances in 1977. His name was a pseudonym of the German artist #PeterHeisterkamp
, who had ‘adopted’ it from the famous American boxing promoter Frank ‘Blinky’ Palermo. In Seymour Likely’s installation 77 pigs have shown up for a lecture by Blinky Palermo the boxing promoter. But there is a Beuys-like blackboard on the wall, and the four paintings feature flowers that only grow in Sri Lanka. The speaker is absent. And yet they wait. Who are they waiting for? Joseph Beuys? Blinky the painter? Or Blinky the boxing promoter? Will anyone ever show up?
