Free race photos from the Oak Island Marathon last weekend. Due to my injured leg, there wasn’t much running going on late in the race! Haven’t run since while taking time for my leg to heal. 🏃‍♂️ Ironically, I’ve spent the last couple days in the hospital with dad. He took a spill Wed & broke his leg. Now he’s recovering from surgery that put him back together. We have a pretty great #gym setup in our basement and I’ve been buying up new equipment to aid in my PT and #recovery , and to keep me strong and healthy if I ever get back to real #tritraining . I finally got myself my own #TRX setup and I’m pumped about it. Hoping that having a strength #workout I enjoy so much right here in my house will keep me honest. I suspect letting the non-#swimbikerun auxiliary strength training lapse over the summer contributed to the hip fracture, I can’t get lazy about it again. . . ps you can see that I still reflexively protect my right leg. It’s a constant mental battle to force myself to use it!

2 years ago I raced the #algordon4m at an 8-something pace. I travelled to Prospect Park on my own, ran on my own, and went home by myself. Last year, I ran this race at a 7:09 pace (which was an all-out effort), with a running buddy, and hung out with my #gt4lyfe squad afterwards. A few weeks ago, I ran a half marathon at a 7:00 minute pace, but then I found myself quasi injured and opted just to cheer for friends at today’s Al Gordon 4-miler. There is a VERY fine line between being in good shape and being injured; I’m trying to stay on the non-injured side of that line. I’m also realizing that progress isn’t always linear, and it’s ok to take your time working to a strong comeback. Also, clearly having fast friends makes you faster.
Track workout with strides + what was supposed to be a 30 min run/walk. Except even the one mile warm up had me on the struggle bus and the stitches that developed during the track workout just would not go away during the run/walk. 😤. Not what I would call a successful workout. . So today I’m reminding myself that good workout or bad workout, it really doesn’t matter (even though the good workouts feel waaaaaaay better). Strength comes from the struggle and the key to success is consistency. Neither of those things can be measured with an individual pace or a mile time. You have to just trust the training, settle in for the journey, and give yourself the grace to come back and try again tomorrow. This! 💯 this 🙌. After having to cut my 10 miles to 3 today I was REALLY hard on myself. But then I thought to myself “screw that!”. I got up, I spent two hours doing things to myself to get me out the door. Anything and everything I could think of to make my hip feel better. I spent two hours telling myself “YOU WILL RUN TODAY!” Maybe not the 10 I planned, but I got my butt out the door and ran a 5k. I could have easily said forget it and stayed home, but I fought for those three miles and I enjoyed the heck out of every single one of them. Having to cut my mileage didn’t defeat me ... it ultimately motivated me! I’ll spend my time this week making myself stronger and better than the week before 👌. So after 4 weeks of yoga for hamstrings, yoga to strengthen my knee, physio rehab exercises , walking/slow running on the treadmill and hula hooping, it was time to go outside for a slow run. I tried to pace myself with my Garmin set at a really slow pace of 12.30 but found that I couldn't keep to it after awhile and ended up doing the second mile at a 11.39 . I then walked for a mile to see how my knee felt. My knee and hamstring held up well and with plenty of stretching before and after it still feels fine. I also did a 20 minute yoga session for my hamstrings tonight to ensure the best possible outcome. My feet are far from healed, but that doesn't mean I can't get some cardio in! I've been barred from running this week and possibly next. But as long as I'm properly bandaged, and I had kept my snowshoes in my trunk, I figured I'd try to make the most of all this snow right after work. I focused on my hiking skills and tracked animal routes with my eyes. I wish I knew what a good snowshoe pace is, but I know I wasn't lollygagging. It was definitely a workout. My new found feeling of hope and positivity after a knee problem I had previously been locking horns with for the past four weeks. I’m not just talking twinges of pain here and there but full on locking up, snapping, crackling and a popping..and it sometimes hurt like hell 😬! As a runner - I know injuries come with the territory from time to time but I have never ever eeeever had anything to this extent before. It stopped me running and sometimes even walking properly...which I found SO frustrating. I had cut back on running to pretty much zero, adopted to strapping my knee up and even buying some walking poles in the vain hope that maybe it would settle down and see to itself (as most previous injuries have done). But alas - it did no such thing! I had also been trying to self diagnose during this time (big no no 😂!) and was horrified at all the possibilities of what I could have and the recovery times, it really didn’t help my mental state one tiny bit. Anyhoo, the final straw came when I went to sit down on the loo but couldn’t as my knee was refusing to bend..🤦🏼‍♀️🚽! And so off to the hospital I went to speak to a GP. He poked my knee and minutes later he matter of factually told me I had #patellofemoralpainsyndrome or ‘Runner’s Knee’, and that I couldn’t run, especially on uneven terrain and hills. You would have thought he told me I needed to have my leg amputated by this point because I was bawling 😳!! Looking back I feel silly for not sucking it up a little more but running is everything to me. Particularly on the trails, hills and mountains. I thought it was all over..(a little dramatic possibly but he said it was difficult to recover from it and was fairly negative about me doing the kind of running I always have done..although he did say, in time I could probably run short flat distances on the pavement. I burst into tears again as that kind of running does not inspire me and never has done 😬!). Anyway, I left the hospital with a little print out on the condition and advice to ‘google what to do’ from said GP 🤨. Some hours later after kicking myself up the arse and getting a grip, I consulted Dr. Google. . (Continued in comment below..🤓!)
This is my 3rd time running this distance for one of my marathon training runs. Today was not the fastest or the best run. But it was a victory because I did it out of my comfort zone routes! Wow running in the burbs isn’t easy! I’m very spoiled in NYC and definitely have to move to another city 😝😉🏃🏻‍♀️. . Thankfully my knees were ok and I finished strong in my parents neighborhood. The last mile was brutal! I felt like I was crawling. My yellow drink here sure did help! It’s a less sugar plant based performance drink that helps me keep my endurance and energy levels up so I can finish strong! It’s what I’ve used for all my marathon trainings and race days. . I can’t believe only 7 weeks left till race day! I’m $500 away from being at 50% of my fundraising goal. Please remember to donate if you haven’t yet. Alright Instagram, whether I’m ready or not it’s time for me to get back to running. I don’t know if I mentioned this in a previous post (too lazy to check), but I had to take what seems like a year-long hiatus from running because of a stress fracture that I suffered in September. . Since then I’ve been nursing myself back to health and doing everything I can to scratch the itch that running always did for me. As a result, I’ve made friends with my gym’s elliptical machine (🤦‍♂️) and I’ve been going to spin classes (shoutout to @cycleguroo ), which have been a lot of fun and I’m definitely planning on continuing. . But now, after getting the all-clear from my doctor, I’m going to try to get back into running in earnest. Naturally, I can’t think of a better way to get back into the sport than by participating in this weekend’s #runDisney #PrincessHalf . . I’m doing this morning’s #Enchanted10k and tomorrow’s half marathon. Obviously I haven’t exactly trained for either, but I’m just going to be realistic and try my best. I have no illusions about doing a PR, coming in the top 30, or anything like that. I’m just going to run this race at my own pace, and whatever time I come in that’ll be it. No expectations, just trying my best. . One thing I have to say about this race, and the overall atmosphere of the #PrincessHalf , is that it’s really calm here. Between the expo, the corrals, and the general attitude, it’s all really calm and collected. I don’t know, maybe it’s because this is my first #PrincessRace , or maybe it’s because there’s more women in attendance, but everyone and everything seems really calm and organized. I love it! I wish all the #runDisney races were like this! . Anyway, wish me luck with today and tomorrow’s races. Also, I’ll be posting more and more as I slowly getting myself back into the groove of being active on IG again. While I’m technically recovering from injury, and pretty much starting again, I’m using the time to take the pressure off . While everyone else runs parkrun on a Sat, my last experience at Porthcawl has meant that it’ll be a spectator sport for me for a while yet. My confidence is knocked and I can’t find my love of that early morning seaside run again right now . Today I had to run in that 3x3x3 programme, so I wanted to see where my fitness actually was. The answer was VERY poor. But I took a route that lead to one of my fave places to clear my mind and just enjoyed the world around me . I stopped at the top to take in the view. Clear my mind after a long, mentally and emotionally draining week. I didn’t care about pace. Today I run for me... and because I could, thinking about those who want to and can’t . The road is going to be longer than I thought, with many more ups and downs. But right now, I want to see what happens if I don’t give up... . It's been a day. Today was liberating... Exhausting, but liberating. Being outside is my favorite. The weather is breaking a bit and it was enjoyable. The last few miles were slow, but most splits stayed in the zone. My back is a bit angry with me but I'm spending some quality time with the heating pad and my TENS unit. A pretty successful 15 min of run/walking...1 min run/2 min walk. My PT said to try out 15 min so after a busy morning of work and some errands I headed out the door. Things just might be looking up again.
Some people read palm, or tarot cards, but I like to read footprints. I can tell a lot about how someone run just by looking at their imprints. The person on the right is a heel striker. You can see the mark where the heel is swinging across the snow before landing. Also, the dark mark in the heel indicates there was more pressure there. Then they roll to the front of the foot and push off or “toe off,” indicated again by the dark impression in the toe area, and the dislodged piece of snow. The heel striking and toe off are inefficient and can contribute to lower leg injuries, like the infamous plantar fasciitis and shin splints. On a positive note, they don’t splay their feet, which is good. In the imprint on the right, there are no dark impressions, so they neither heel strike or push off, and are landing more mid foot. This weeks long run was a proxy 5k, run by Morty and Sharon - the quote, "whether you think you can or think you can't, you're right" I'm going bonkers trying to not run and further injure my knee - I tried to just do "a little" last week, definitely did too much, and ended up paying dearly for it on Sunday. When I was talking with the woman from whom this quote comes, she reminded me that we all have to learn, and sometimes that means we have to make poor decisions, but that there's still plenty of time to heal, and I already know that so much of the marathon is mental. Sometime I feel like the universe is trying to tell me something - or may be I’m just in a spot where I am willing to listen . After a dumping of snow last night I still managed to venture to yoga this morning. Our lesson was on perspective - our teacher told us how she woke up mad and angry at the shoveling and bad roads staring at the inches we got in a few short hours. Then her son woke up and looked outside in amazement. Yippee for snow! We can build a snowman! . This is so true. It depends on how you look at what’s going on around you and it’s up to you on how you react to these circumstances. I have been beyond down not being able to casually go out for a run without fear or pain or being able to run 20 miles at a time. But in the meantime I’m already light years ahead of where I need to be to get a a huge PR at IM Boulder with all of the excess swimming and biking I am doing. I have gotten to spend more weekends with loved ones. I have gotten to do things like snowshoe or hike enjoying the beautiful snow we have had. I am working more heavily on strength and nutrition, and in the end I am going to be stronger. Yeah I may not have the best PR day at Boston but I will still get to run 26.2 miles with this amazing body of mine. There will be more Boston’s. There will be more marathons. So now I'm sat with a bag of peas on it before I nip to Tesco to get more bath salts, paracetamol & Ibuprofen. . I'm off work now for a few days so my leg can get some proper rest. . Spent a lot of time stretching and rolling last night, spent this morning doing the same and KT taping the crap out of my hip/thigh. I was still sore after all of that and knew that my 10 miles was not happening today 😔. Ran a 5k with my friend and then she continued on with our planned 10. Really sucks that my body just won’t cooperate. Feeling pretty defeated, frustrated and mad that every time I turn around I have another hurdle in my running to overcome. Vegan cheese toastie with a giant carrot, cucumber and tomato. Followed by an apple with a lot of soya yogurt! I ran my 16 miles as per marathon training plan this morning with a friend who told me he’s aiming for a 3:15 marathon 😮 I think I’ve found my stomach-friendly alternative to gels: baby fruit pouches are the bomb! Feeling very very tired now (had to walk the dogs after) and just need to hold out until food shop done and then I intend to flop and crash out. Although I am running again something I am also exercising is my patience. The key is for me to be running PAIN FREE and to EASE back in to mileage. Another day on the side lines for me and it's glorious. However if I was out running this morning I would have missed a milestone for us. "Daddy they've been teaching me how to write my #name at nursery" mini B exclaimed and with a start that's exactly what he did. We celebrate the small victories but today's is massive.
