Manjit Bawa’s Krishna is the cowherd God, simultaneously metaphysical and yet intimately material. Surrounded by cows, dogs and other forest creatures, he belongs to the ‘aranya’ or wild spaces, the cosmos; but is not immune from engaging with the world, ‘grama’. This engagement is mediated by cosmic music emanating from his flute, surrounded by his adoring devotees. Bawa himself was an adept and passionate flautist, his brother Manmohan and he would often play together as the sun set over the mountains, creating a haunting melody that lent even greater depth to the greens of the deodar forests and the blues and purples of the snowclad peaks.
In this particular painting, Krishna lying in his cosmic sleep, is significant not only because it is one of the large museum-sized works by Bawa, but also as it belongs to a series of works that celebrates Bawa’s excavation and interpretation of the Krishna narrative. It marks the culmination of the cosmic cycle that is represented in Bawa’s works and Indian art and mythos through Krishna the flute player, the Kaliya slayer, the Govardhan lifting protector, the ultimate player who, through his lila, regulates not only dharma but also its antithesis
